As we continue preparing for the reopening of the RWJCC pool, important work is happening behind the scenes. Pool staff have been hired and are now participating in orientation and training as we continue working alongside our partners at the YMCA to prepare for the upcoming State inspection process.

We know many families have been asking about daily admission and season pass information. We expect to share those details soon.

This pool has been an important part of our community’s story for generations. Seeing it come back to life has taken the commitment of many people, organizations, volunteers, and supporters who believed this day was possible.

Thank you for your continued patience, encouragement, and support. We look forward to welcoming the community back to the Robert W. Johnson Community Center pool this summer.

Stay tuned. More updates are on the way.

Progress.

Water is back in the Robert W. Johnson Community Center pool and baby pool.

Tomorrow, the pool will undergo treatment as preparations continue for the upcoming season. We have also submitted dates to the State and are hopeful inspections will take place next week.

While several important steps remain before an opening date can be announced, this is another major milestone in bringing the pool back to service for our community.

Thank you to the many partners, supporters, volunteers, and advocates who have helped make this possible.

More updates soon.

Last week, the Maryland Historical Trust recognized work taking place in and around the Jonathan Street community through its Outstanding Individual Leadership Award at the Local Level.

While the award was presented to RWJCC Board Treasurer Reggie Turner, it reflects years of effort by residents, volunteers, community organizations, preservation advocates, elected officials, and partners who have worked to preserve the history of this community while investing in its future.

The Robert W. Johnson Community Center stands at the center of that story.

Originally built as North Street School, one of the educational anchors of Hagerstown's African American community, this building has served generations of families. Today, it continues that mission through youth programming, food distribution, health initiatives, educational opportunities, and ongoing revitalization efforts.

Guests attending the recognition event not only reflected on the building's history, they also had an opportunity to view architectural renderings that illustrate the next chapter of the Center's revitalization. These plans provide a glimpse of how this historic community asset can continue serving future generations while honoring its past.

Several guests in attendance have deep personal ties to the building, including Senator Joanne Benson, who attended North Street School before integration and has remained a steadfast advocate for the community throughout her career.

This recognition is not a finish line. It is a reminder that preserving history and strengthening communities requires long-term commitment, partnership, and vision.

We are grateful to everyone who continues to support the Robert W. Johnson Community Center and the Jonathan Street community.

It takes a community.

The progress being made at the Robert W. Johnson Community Center has only been possible because of dedicated volunteers, community partners, donors, board members, and supporters who believe in this place and its future.

As we prepare for a busy summer season, we’re looking for community members who want to get involved and help make a difference.

Volunteer opportunities include:

• Special events
• Youth programs
• Food distributions
• Community outreach
• Administrative support
• Facility and grounds projects
• Pool and recreation support

Whether you can volunteer once a month or on a regular basis, we’d love to hear from you.

The Robert W. Johnson Community Center is honored to announce that we have been awarded a $50,000 Reparations Grant from the Episcopal Diocese of Maryland.

RWJCC was one of only four organizations selected statewide to receive funding through this year’s Reparations Grant Program and the only organization in Western Maryland to receive an award.

This investment will support the creation of a lifeguard workforce development program connected to the reopening of our historic community pool. The program will provide training, certification, and employment opportunities for young people and residents from the Jonathan Street community and surrounding neighborhoods.

For generations, the Robert W. Johnson Community Center has been a place where lives were shaped through education, recreation, mentorship, and community. This grant honors that legacy while investing in the future.

The impact of this award extends far beyond the pool itself. It will help create pathways to employment, teach life-saving skills, expand access to water safety education, and provide meaningful opportunities for local residents to gain workforce experience and leadership skills.

The Jonathan Street community has a rich history and an enduring legacy, but it has also experienced decades of disinvestment. This grant represents a tangible investment in people, opportunity, and community renewal.

As RWJCC prepares to reopen its community pool for the first time in nearly a decade, this funding helps ensure that the benefits reach beyond recreation and create lasting opportunities for the next generation.

We are deeply grateful to the Episcopal Diocese of Maryland for its commitment to restorative investment and for recognizing the importance of the work taking place at RWJCC and throughout the Jonathan Street community.

Thank you to our board members, volunteers, partners, donors, and supporters who continue to believe in this mission.

Together, we are preserving history, creating opportunity, and building a stronger future for generations to come.
