October 12th is Indigenous Peoples' Day, a day to honor the cultures, histories, and enduring contributions of Indigenous communities across North America.

So much of Indigenous history, tradition, and perspective is woven into the story of this country, and this is a good day to explore it a little more.

The Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian is a wonderful place to start, with online resources exploring Native art, history, and culture through digital exhibitions, collections, and firsthand stories from Native communities.

Back-to-school season can bring new routines, new environments, and new safety concerns. Parents, caregivers, and students can help create safer schools and campuses by keeping conversations open, calm, and judgment-free.

Tips for parents and caregivers:
• Talk about consent early and often: it should be clear, voluntary, and can be withdrawn at any time.
• Listen without blame and remind your child they can always come to you.
• Help them identify trusted adults, school staff, and campus resources.
• Make a plan for rides, parties, dorms, extracurriculars, and online communication.

Tips for students:
• Trust your instincts—leave or seek help if a situation feels unsafe.
• Check in with friends and make a plan to get home safely.
• Know where to find support at school or on campus.
• Remember: s*xual assault is never the survivor’s fault.
