Remembering loved ones. Sharing traditions. Finding community.

Hispanos Unidos de Guilford (HUG) brought students together at Founders on Friday to celebrate Día de los Mu***os, or Day of the Dead, a Mexican tradition honoring loved ones who have died.

Students sampled Mexican breads and desserts, made crafts and shared in a display of candles and photographs celebrating the people whose memories they carry.

For HUG vice president Aixa Araujo '28, the gathering also reflected what drew her to the club: “It was an easier way to find my community.

Guilford's longest-tenured and winningest football coach has died.

Charles Forbes led the Quakers to 68 victories and seven winning seasons from 1976 to 1990. He was a man of few words and quiet intensity, says Keith Millner '82, a starting quarterback for Charles' teams and now the College's Chief Operating Officer.

More than 100 people gathered Saturday morning outside Duke Hall at Guilford College for the unveiling of a new Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) historical marker commemorating the Battle of New Garden.

Fought on March 15, 1781, the battle was a series of clashes between British and American forces that helped buy Gen. Nathanael Greene time to prepare for the pivotal Battle of Guilford Courthouse later that day.

The marker also recognizes the vital role of the New Garden Quaker community. Guided by their commitment to peace and care for others, Quakers tended to wounded soldiers on both sides, despite their own losses and the devastation of war. They also buried the dead, honoring a shared humanity amid a bitter conflict.

That legacy of compassion and service remains an important part of Guilford College’s history as the nation celebrates its 250th anniversary of American independence.
