Black Child Development Institute Greensboro

Black Child Development Institute Greensboro In the words of our founder Sarah Walden Herbin, "Who, if not us, will advocate for our children?" Black Child Development Institute of Greensboro, Inc.

(BCDI-G) utilizes a cadre of volunteers to provide programs that support the success of children through advocacy and education. Since 1978 we have recruited, screened and trained thousands of volunteers to provide services to over 15,000 elementary, middle and high school students. Our goal:

1) Increase the number of children who have access to supportive academic services.
2) Increase the numbe

r of children who are reading above grade level.
3) Increase the knowledge base and access of parents to community resources.
4) Increase the number of volunteers engaged in service.

What a year it has been at BCDI-G! We are grateful for the time spent with our students and are especially thankful for their voices, which remind us of our mission.

Thank you to our parents and families for your trust and partnership.

A BIG THANK YOU to our afterschool staff and classroom coaches for putting in the work daily. We couldn't do this without you!

Special thanks to our administrative team who ensure everything runs smoothly. Also, thank you to our van drivers, Mr. Jeff and Mr. Maynard, for safely transporting our students, and to Mr. James for keeping our facilities clean and ready for learning. We also appreciate school administrators and staff who welcomed us and supported program operations.

Thank you to Pastor Fisher and the St. Paul Baptist Church family for allowing us to use your space and for supporting our program throughout the year.

To our volunteers from North Carolina A&T, Greensboro College, University of North Carolina - Greensboro, and local organizations and companies...THANK YOU for your heart to serve.

Finally, a heartfelt thank you to Mrs. Latrayl Adams-Mark of WS/FCS for our student SEL sessions, Mr. Tay of Royal Expressions for dance enrichment, and Mrs. Margo Ford-Crosby of TLC Consulting for family engagement workshops. BCDI-G was honored to attend United Way of Greater Greensboro's Annual Meeting and Celebration, represented by our Interim Executive Director, Jocquita Williams, and the Director of Community Engagement, Tonya Gibson.

UWGG's support means so much to our work, not only through funding, but through the connections they help build between organizations committed to serving our community.

We also want to congratulate Beacon Technologies on receiving the Key to the Community Award! Beacon has been a consistent volunteer partner with BCDI-G, and we are grateful for the time and service they continue to share with our children.

It was a beautiful reminder of what happens when organizations come together with a shared commitment to community.

After a week that included the start of EOG testing, our students enjoyed spending a little creative time with volunteers from United Institutional Baptist Church. Bubble wands and bracelets were perfect for putting both little hands and big creativity to work! ๐Ÿซง

Thank you to United Institutional Baptist Church for spending time with our students, and to United Way Greater Greensboro for helping make the connection.

Parenting can come with a lot to hold, and children are carrying things too, like big feelings, growing pains, and moments they donโ€™t always know how to explain.

Stress-less parenting doesnโ€™t mean stress-free parenting. It means creating space to pause, listen, reset, and respond with care when things feel heavy.

A little patience, a little humor, and a little support can go a long way for both parents and children.

We're so proud of our scholars and the work they've put in during our EOG test prep activities. We know tests donโ€™t tell the full story of a childโ€™s potential, but they are still an important part of their academic progress. Thatโ€™s why helping students approach testing with confidence, understanding, and the right support matters so much to us.

Our scholars have been working hard, and we want them to feel encouraged as they head into testing.

BCDI-G had a great time at Erwin Montessoriโ€™s Sneaker Ball, connecting with families, seeing familiar faces, and meeting new ones.

We loved seeing them glammed up and so excited for the evening. It was a great way to celebrate with families and staff, the winding down of another school year.

Thank you, Erwin Montessori, for having us. We loved being part of the fun.

Latrayl Adams-Mark, the Director of Counseling and Well-Being for Student Services at Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools, has been working with our 2nd through 5th graders, leading conversations focused on social-emotional learning. She has been helping them develop important life skills, such as understanding their emotions, gratitude, and learning to be present for themselves and others.

Weโ€™re grateful for the way she has connected with our students and created space for conversations that matter. Weโ€™re looking forward to having her back with us this summer!

When childcare works, families stay stableโ€”and communities move forward.

Access to reliable, affordable childcare shapes whether families can work, children can learn, and households can build a more secure future. Itโ€™s not just a personal decisionโ€”itโ€™s a community system that influences opportunity, economic mobility, and longโ€‘term outcomes.

At United Way of Greater Greensboro, we bring together partners, data, and community voices to connect childcare access to poverty reduction and economic stability. Ending poverty means strengthening the systems families rely on every day.

Take action: stay informed, support communityโ€‘led childcare solutions, and join us in advancing systems that help familiesโ€”and Greensboroโ€”thrive.
