After two days in Montgomery and three memorable visits in Atlanta, we are on our way home with full hearts and emerging ideas for what is next. Thank you, Anthony Clay of Carolina Friends School, who offered inspired leadership and to each participant who jumped in with trust, compassion, and vulnerability. And thanks to all of you who are walking to the polls as we speak! The march continues.

Yesterday started in Birmingham, with a driving tour narrated by Judge Houston Brown, stops at the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, Kelly Ingram Park, and the 16th Street Baptist Church. Then, after a short drive and as the sun began to set, we walked across the Edmund Pettus Bridge and found ourselves in quiet worship in the presence of those who came before. Back on the bus to Montgomery, we sang “Ain’t gonna Let Nobody Turn Me Around” and continued to listen to each others’ stories and the stories of this place.

Friends like to say that every First Day (Sunday) is special at New Garden Friends Meeting. Yet some First Days are more special than others. That was the case on October 4, Homecoming Sunday 2026. Julia Hood Tanner, whose family has had strong ties to New Garden Friends Meeting for three generations, delivered the prepared message last First Day (9-13-2026).
She's now an art historian, curator, and educator at Reynolda Museum of American Art in Winston-Salem.
Her take: Whether contemplating a work of art in a museum or experiencing the divine at Quaker meeting, everything starts with paying attention.
