This is a sad week for Greeley. Please be extra alert for pedestrians and cyclists. They can be difficult to see after dark and don't always follow the rules of the road.

📰Bicyclist Killed in Crash📰

GREELEY, Colo. – On Monday, October 12, at approximately 7:50p.m., Greeley Police officers responded to a crash involving a bicycle and a vehicle at the intersection of 11th Avenue and 4th Street.

Preliminary investigation determined a 53-year-old man was traveling eastbound on 4th Street on a bicycle, without operational headlights or tail lamps, when he failed to stop at a posted stop sign. He proceeded across the street where he was struck by a northbound white Ford Explorer, driven by a 25-year-old man.

First responders attempted life-saving measures on the bicyclist before he was transported to a local hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. His name will be released by the Weld County Coroner’s Office pending next-of-kin notification. The man driving the Explorer suffered no injuries.

On-call traffic investigators responded to conduct a thorough investigation and reconstructed the scene. Video evidence of the collision was obtained, and based on the physical evidence and footage, investigators determined the bicyclist to be at fault for the collision. No charges are pending against the driver of the Explorer.

Another motorcyist killed in Greeley. That makes two in the past week.

📰Motorcyclist Killed in Crash📰

GREELEY, Colo. – On Sunday, October 11, at approximately 4:30a.m., Greeley Police officers responded to a crash involving a motorcycle and a vehicle at the intersection of 35th Avenue and 28th Street.

Preliminary investigation determined a 16-year-old man was driving a motorcycle northbound on 35th Avenue when a 43-year-old man driving a Chevrolet Impala attempted to make a left turn onto 35th Avenue from 28th Street and the two vehicles collided.

First responders attempted life-saving measures, but the motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene. His name will be released by the Weld County Coroner’s Office pending next-of-kin notification. The man driving the Impala suffered minor injuries.

The crash remains under active investigation by the Greeley Police Department Traffic Unit, and potential charges are pending the final investigation outcome. Officers are investigating if speed was a factor in the crash.

Our Frontier Academy Buckle Up Drive Smart (BUDS) team did a seat belt check at the school on the morning of October 8th. These are the results: Belted: 488 (82%), Not belted: 107 (18%), Distracted: 15, Tinted: 96. Looks like a lot of occupants need to be reminded of the importance of wearing a seat belt! Good job team!

Colorado defines electric scooters (under 100 lbs, mph) as vehicles, not toys, allowing them on roads and sidewalks. Riders have the same rights as bicyclists, with no driver’s license or registration required. E-bikes (3 classes) and scooters must follow traffic laws, though local jurisdictions may have stricter rules.

Red light running fatalities have increased nearly 60% over the last decade. Yesterday we observed a driver whiz through a residential 4 way stop where 2 vehicles were already stopped and a fast roll through in a shopping district. Always stop at red lights and stop signs.
