The Trump administration has released a new national counterterrorism strategy that explicitly describes “radically pro-transgender” political groups as potential domestic security threats.
The 16-page strategy, developed under counterterrorism adviser Sebastian Gorka, shifts federal focus toward what the administration calls “violent secular political groups” tied to anarchism, antifa activism, and “radically pro-transgender” ideology — even though transgender people make up a very small percentage of the U.S. population and there is no available research showing transgender people commit violence at disproportionately high rates.
The language is both dangerous and historically familiar.
Framing broad political or identity-based movements as security threats can blur the line between preventing violence and targeting marginalized communities or political dissent.
And when governments begin associating minority identities with danger, extremism, or national threats, history shows that rhetoric can shape public perception in harmful ways — especially toward groups already experiencing hostility, discrimination, political scapegoating, and real-world violence.
Transgender people already face disproportionately high rates of harassment, threats, assault, and intimidation. Many families are already living with fear for their children’s safety, mental health, and future. Language like this does not exist in a vacuum. When leaders portray a marginalized group as suspicious or dangerous, it can further normalize fear, hostility, and dehumanization toward people who are simply trying to live their lives authentically.
We should all want policies that genuinely protect people from violence and harm. But protecting public safety should never require turning vulnerable communities into political targets.
At Real Mama Bears, we will continue standing beside transgender people and their families loudly, publicly, and unapologetically. Our transgender loved ones are not threats. They are human beings deserving of safety, dignity, and love.
