March 29, 2026 – Three Rivers, Michigan
UAW and Michigan leaders turned out in force on Sunday at Three Rivers High School in support of the efforts of American Axle’s bargaining committee in contract negotiations. They have been in negotiations since March 23rd. This contract is critical for the members of Local 2093 as they attempt to take back what they lost in their 2008 contract.
In 2008, American Axle claimed to be in dire financial straights in the build up to the Great Recession and automotive industry crisis. They had some of their plants on a closing list, and threatened that the Three Rivers plant could be one of them if the membership did not agree to concessions. Those concessions included giving up half of their pay for many of their union workers.
In recent years, AA has been expanding their business by purchasing other companies. They have more than recovered from the dire straights they were in back in 2008, and yet they continue to resist letting their workforce recover with them.
Region 1D Assistant Director Scott Zuchschwerdt ran the show as UAW International President Shawn Fain, Region 1D Director Steve Dawes, Three Rivers Mayor Angel Johnson, Michigan Lt. Governor Garlin Gilcrist, and several other politicians, UAW officers, and union members from across Michigan turned out to support the members of Local 2093. The local bargaining committee took the stage to report on bargaining so far: where they are at and how far they intend to take it, with their Servicing Representative Frank Hines backing them all the way. We also heard from some rank-and-file members on what the last eighteen years have been like and how important it is to finally get a fair contract again.
Everyone held to the main points: “No More Tiers!” and “No More Concessions!” Everyone rallied behind the battle cry: “IT’S OUR TIME!”
