Literacy Outreach

Literacy Outreach Everybody can learn, everybody can teach! We empower learners who struggle with literacy skills, so that they can strengthen their communities. Volunteer today!

Serving our community since 1986, Literacy Outreach is a local, non-profit agency that promotes literacy in Garfield County, Colorado. We professionally train volunteers to teach foundational literacy skills: reading, writing, math, and/or English language skills. Demand for our programs is greater now than ever. Adults are waiting to learn. Literacy Outreach works with adults who have the greates

t barriers to literacy and learning. For many students, our program is their last opportunity to gain the skills that are essential to survive in a fast-paced and evolving world.

World Refugee Day - June 20, 2026 🌍 🫂 🤍

This year’s theme emphasises that “Safety is not just the absence of violence. It means legal protection, shelter, health care, education, the right to work, and the chance to rebuild and live in dignity. No one is safe until the most vulnerable among us are.” - UNHCR.

🔶 According to the IRC, as of 2025, the number of forcibly displaced people was 118 million, 50 million of whom are children. These figures have almost doubled in the past decade 📈

🔶 More than half of refugees come from just 5 countries - Venezuela, Ukraine, Syria, Afghanistan, and Sudan.

🔶 Refugee women and children are disproportionately vulnerable to human trafficking, sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV), exploitation, and severe psychological trauma ♀️

🔶 More than half of the world’s displaced population remains inside their own countries as Internally Displaced People (IDPs). Displacements are driven primarily by conflict, violence, and climate-related disasters⚡️

This year marks since the adoption of the 1951 Refugee Convention, to which 149 countries are signatories. It outlines states‘ legal responsibility to protect refugees and grant them the right to seek asylum ⚖️

The challenges faced by refugees are immense 🚨

World Refugee Day reminds us that welcoming and integrating refugees is a global responsibility. We must step up our efforts to protect refugees and give them every opportunity to build new lives.

We really enjoyed having a small lunch gathering with our tutors Bill, Kathy, Karen, Nancy, Lynn and Hilde last Friday. It was great to hear their stories about working with their students and swap ideas about teaching strategies. Tutors make our world go round!

🙌 Literacy is a right. Every adult deserves the chance to read a job application, understand health care communications, support their child’s education, and move through the world with confidence and independence.
