We’re Getting Concrete at SSCS!
Today, the foundation is literally being poured for a great school year ahead.
Aldo Contreras, St. Stephen’s head of maintenance, along with a team of St. Stephen volunteers have been preparing for this moment for the last few weeks – excavating, building the forms, laying the rebar grid, and adding a gravel base for a replacement paved surface around the east and south sides of the school.
Today, another team of volunteers showed up to pour the new sidewalk.
“When I asked at Mass if anyone had any experience with pouring concrete, around 20 folks showed up in the narthex after Mass to offer their help,” said Fr. Matt. “And here we are.”
Keeping the concrete moving so it doesn’t set is critical. The pro-crew moved fast and working in tandem—Victor pushes the concrete into a wheelbarrow, Marcelino dumps it out, Dionisio tamps it down, and Beto smoothes it out.
Previously just a temporary, makeshift surface in disrepair after five years of use, the newly installed concrete will soon welcome the feet of St. Stephen students in August who will continue to build on the firm foundation of academics and faith offered at St. Stephen.
Thank you to Marcelino, Beto, Dionisio, Julio, Isabel, Gaspardo, both Franciscos, Jose and several others who volunteered their time, labor, and expertise to make this project happen.
