At Community Builders, we spend a lot of time thinking about systems change: How do we improve the structures, policies, and relationships needed to help communities to thrive?

But sometimes, systems-level thinking needs to be applied to our own organization.

Earlier this month, the Community Builders team gathered in Glenwood Springs to step back from our day-to-day work and take a closer look at our own organizational systems. We found ourselves asking many of the same questions we bring to communities:
-How can we better structure our organization to support our work?
-Where do we need more capacity and how can we build it?
-How do our relationships with one another impact our ability to get things done?

Just like local communities, our impact can only go as far as the systems that support it. And, of course, we also made time for the important stuff: beer, tacos, and rafting the Colorado River!

Last week, members of the Community Builders team were on the ground in the San Luis Valley gathering feedback on a set of draft community values that will serve as the foundation of the City of Alamosa's next comprehensive plan.

Why start with values?

Over the past 10 years of working with rural communities across the American West, we’ve learned that starting planning projects with a values process builds connection, creates shared understanding, and uncovers common ground. Then, when we encounter more complicated or contentious issues later in the project, we can return to those values as a reminder of all that we share.

Friends who live or recreate in Mesa County: we’d love your input!

Please take about 10 minutes to share what you value, what could be better, and what you hope for the future of outdoor recreation in the region. You’ll also have a chance to win a gift certificate to a local retailer.

Our team is so excited to be working with the Grand Valley Outdoor Recreation Coalition on True West, a collaborative effort to build a shared vision and practical action plan for sustaining and improving the outdoor recreation opportunities that make Mesa County such a special place.

Throughout the last year and a half, Community Builders has collaborated with Leadville local Adam Ducharme to capture the story behind the One Community Project – an initiative to create a joint comprehensive plan for the City of Leadville and Lake County.

The result is a short film that captures what this project is really about: the long, winding process of building civic capacity. From uncovering common ground to exploring the tradeoffs that shape local decision-making, the film shows how the One Community Project has helped transform Leadville and Lake County into a community better equipped to navigate the next hard conversation.

Thank you, Adam, for documenting the journey we’ve been on together!

Community Builders was in Leadville this week to kick off the public review period for the One Community Plan - Leadville and Lake County's first-ever joint comprehensive plan.

More than 60 community members joined us for an open house to explore the draft Plan and share feedback on key priorities such as workforce housing, climate resilience, and infrastructure modernization.

We are so grateful for the time, ideas, and energy the community continues to bring to this process! The Plan is on track to be considered for adoption by the City and County this summer.

Silverton, Colorado and CB have partnered on many projects together. In our most recent Story of Impact, we revisit the Silverton Compass Master Plan, a ten-year, community-produced document identifying goals and actions for the town. One by one, Silverton is checking off items in the plan, sometimes leading the state in implementing forward-looking plans. Read all about what’s happening there in the latest Story of Impact, part of our 10 Year Anniversary series.
