Cooper Mowen's new ride has flames painted on the front and back, because a five-year-old's car should look fast. The paint job came from Caidence Jennings, an OT student at Bowling Green State University, who spent nearly three hours with Cooper and his mom working out what he'd need to drive it: a raised seat, a push-button accelerator instead of pedals, and straps to keep him upright.

His was one of seven ride-on cars that BGSU's first class of OT students customized, child by child, at the program's inaugural Go Baby Go event. Every car went home with a family at no cost, with support from The Ability Center of Greater Toledo.

“My professors were an invaluable resource.”

Paul Thomas said that as an OTA student. Today, he’s a COTA. His path to exam day was shaped by the people who taught him. Professors with years of wisdom, and the willingness to share it, gave him a foundation he could trust when it counted.

On a June morning in downtown Winter Haven, a coffee stand did double duty. Polk State College OTA students Star Arce and Emily Creamer led Pouring with a Purpose, where patrons of The Mission of Winter Haven welcomed guests, took orders, and served coffee. Each order built the customer service skills that support a return to work.

The event grew out of the OTA program's ongoing partnership with The Mission, a day center for people facing hunger and homelessness. There, students assess clients, design interventions, and run group programs under supervision. For Star, it was also a chance to change how the community sees its neighbors: as capable people who deserve dignity and respect.
