“For years, Tower District residents have called for a neighborhood library. Now, through voter-approved Measure B funding and the determination of local advocates, that long-standing community priority is moving forward.”

The temporary library at the Ted C. Wills Community Center will bring free access to books, computers, Wi-Fi, and a dedicated children’s area with early literacy stations.

Manchester sits just a few blocks outside the north eastern edge of the tower specific plan. What happens there (as in housing) has potential impact on Tower. So we asked the city of Fresno’s project manager for the proposed housing element at Manchester Center about the status of that particular proposal. This is the information received. Thanks to the city of Fresno for responding so quickly

“The City of Fresno has not received any new information from the Developer. The individual that was hired to manage the mall and housing project was let go. Their plans were at the permit ready stage when they haulted. In our last communication they indicated that they had not abandoned the vision to construct the housing however were putting their plans on pause.”

A Fresno MANCHESTER MALL housing element was proposed a couple of years ago. There has been no notable movement. What happened?
We’re on a quest to find out. We’ve contacted the city’s project manager. Stay tuned.

In South Los Angeles, a new kind of building is going up, with a full Costco warehouse store on the ground level and 800 apartments stacked on top of it. It's Costco's first store designed this way, built in partnership with the developer Thrive Living.

Of the 800 units, 184 are reserved for low-income households, which matters in a city where rents keep climbing and open land for new housing is scarce. Putting homes above a big-box store makes use of space that would otherwise be nothing but a roof.

The project uses AB 2011, a California law designed to speed up approvals for housing built on land zoned for commerce. Reports say it is privately funded without government subsidies, and the rent paid by the store helps support the homes above it.

For the people who eventually move in, the groceries will be downstairs, in a city that ranks among the most expensive housing markets in the United States.
