Before anyone can open up, they need something to trust first. On this ride, that something is dirt roads, tough climbs, and five days of showing up for each other before a single hard conversation happens.

"The motorcycle is just the nexus to build the trust among this group of people," one rider put it, "because you need to have that bond before you're going to share the things that were shared this week." By the end, they weren't just fellow riders. "These people now, they'll be brothers for the rest of my life."

A ride like this doesn't happen on its own. Thank you to the departments who sent their people to us, and every sponsor and co-sponsor who helped fund this week — you made room for something these guys needed.

Women make up roughly 19% of motorcycle riders nationwide, according to the Motorcycle Industry Council — "a male-dominated, if not male-centric, sport," as one rider on this trip put it.

We Ride With Her exists because of that gap. Our Women's Relief Rides bring together female veterans, first responders, and riders for the same 5-day peer-support model that built Motorcycle Relief Project, in a space designed specifically for women to be vulnerable with each other. "We need to stick together," one rider said. "We need to support each other."

The community is small. We have to come together — not just so more women ride, but so the women carrying the heaviest stuff have somewhere to put it down.

Her strength doesn't diminish yours. It multiplies it.

"I'm the quiet guy."

That's how one first responder introduced himself before opening up about years of PTSD, depression, and anxiety he'd never talked about with anyone outside his own head.

Motorcycle Relief Project brings veterans and first responders together for 5-day adventure motorcycle rides through Colorado and Arizona — riding all day, then sitting down every night for what we call Highs and Lows, where people say the true thing instead of the easy thing. No clinicians running the show. Just riders who've been through it, showing up for each other.

By the end, one rider explained it simply: once you start talking about it, it becomes therapeutic — especially with people who've lived through the same things you have. "This ride will live with me."

"I was a nervous Nelly."

That's how one rider described herself walking into Relief Ride #86 — our 7th Women's Ride for female veterans, first responders, and riders. Five days later: "I am a new person."

In between, this group of women did something most of us spend our lives avoiding — they were vulnerable, with strangers, with zero control over the road ahead. They talked about fear. Some of them talked about PTSD. All of them pushed past a comfort zone they didn't know they had.

"Somehow we opened up that why of why I started riding to begin with," one rider said. Another put it simply: "I've faced my fears throughout the week — I feel so much better about my situation."

Her strength doesn't diminish yours. It multiplies it.

Every year, we bring first responders together on the weekend of September 11th.

Over the years, we've hosted New York City firefighters and police officers who worked through the events of 9/11 itself. We've also seen EMS workers and other first responders — men and women — who've spent their careers answering the kind of calls most of us hope we never have to.

Different jobs. Different calls. Different years. But sitting together in a room, they said a lot of the same things.

MRP President Mike Bobbitt: "We actually had three guys from ground zero. One of them was a Port Authority cop who lost 28 of his brothers and sisters on that day."

"I take my mental health very seriously. I go see a counselor regularly. I'm not ashamed to admit that. We have these courageous conversations with each other — and it's not just that tough guy bravado."

"This has been the best week of my entire life. The bonding with the other guys has been just as good, if not better, than the riding."
