Our REACH family is devastated to share that Susan “Suzie” Smith has passed away from injuries sustained during the accident involving helicopter N414RX on Highway 50 on Monday night.

We will remember Suzie as a pillar of the EMS and healthcare community who saved countless lives by delivering compassionate care in their darkest hours. Suzie’s 50-year career as a nurse included nearly 21 years with REACH, and we are proud to call her our colleague and friend. We hope she is remembered for the light she brought to every call, every shift, and every patient she blessed with her care.

We grieve Suzie’s loss with her family, friends, colleagues and the entire community that she faithfully served. Her impact will be felt for years to come through the lives she touched, the teams she strengthened, and the compassion she embodied. Thank you for keeping Suzie’s loved ones and our REACH family in your thoughts and support for our team during this difficult time.

A medical transport helicopter operated by Airmedic has crashed on Quebec’s North Shore during a rescue operation, resulting in four missing employees. The accident occurred around 10:30 p.m. on Friday near Natashquan, Quebec, approximately 1,000 kilometres northeast of Montreal.

The helicopter was conducting a medical evacuation when it reportedly crashed into a lake shortly after takeoff. Airmedic specializes in air medical transport, operating both planes and helicopters, and offers its services across Canada.

There were five individuals on board, comprising one passenger and four crew members. According to Quebec provincial police Sgt. Élizabeth Marquis-Guy, one man was rescued and sustained non-life-threatening injuries, and was subsequently transported to a hospital. The condition of the remaining individuals on board is currently unavailable.

Police have enlisted the assistance of the Royal Canadian Air Force. Len Hickey from the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre in Halifax stated that a CC-130 Hercules and a CH-149 Cormorant helicopter have been dispatched to aid in ongoing search and rescue efforts in Lac Watshishou. Furthermore, Hickey mentioned that search and rescue technicians plan to dive in the vicinity of the helicopter's last known location as part of the ongoing efforts.

Earlier on Saturday, Quebec provincial police indicated their intention to search a wooded area in the region north of the community in the province's Côte-Nord region. A command post has been established, and search specialists are on site, equipped to search on water, by ground, and in the air.
