“Ethnocentrism and political tribalism distance us from our fellow brothers and sisters in Christ,” writes Jonathan Tremaine Thomas.
“Christians of goodwill know we have much work to do in this area. And one crucial component we need to solve our dysfunctions is a new, love-driven, multiethnic Christian movement with a passion for justice and an aim to turn hearts of stone into hearts of flesh.
If our burning pursuits of justice are burning people out or multiplying cold hearts, then we need to question what’s causing those results.
Like the Civil Rights Movement, such work must be rooted in hope and gospel fidelity, not divisive temporal grievances, political machinations, or the ideological ends of secular activists.
Christian activists can gain accolades and the world yet lose their soul in the process. We must radically return to showing God’s unconditional love, even for our enemies.
To deal with the social upheaval we face—and to complete the unfinished work in front of us—we need the humility and courage to acknowledge both our failures and our great need for a renewed revelation about the ministry of reconciliation we are called to carry out.”
