At 98 degrees today, Lynn and I went downtown with Calzones, Gatorade, water, and tangerines. We can feed lunch for about $4.50 per person including drinks.

In this heat, everyone received 4 bottles of liquid. The elderly received a few more.

Ice, batteries for fans, wipes, paper towels, lemonade left over from our event, hard candies for Chief, and bug spray.

The are in dire need of fly strips. According to Walmart and Dollar Tree, this is not the season for fly strips. People in their tents were COVERED with black flies. It was awful. I added them to our Amazon wish list.

People are also asking for a light source. I added a light source (affordable) to our Amazon list they can hang in their tent or on a belt loop at night.

And we always need batteries . . .

Today All Among Us Inc. took down 35 lunches including 35 McDonalds chicken sandwiches (value meal $1.50), tangerines, a gatorade and water.

Baby, it was hot.

100 degrees is stifling. It simply is . . .

Will be back downtown tomorrow with lunch, drinks, batteries, and body wipes.

Praying this is the last week of this deadly heat.

After serving over 20 lunches (and a ton of drinks), we found this man sleeping on a grate in full sun.

It scared me, knowing how the heat can cause serious burns in this weather. Also heat exhaustion or heat stroke.

He had nothing covering his legs, arms, or head. He was hard to wake up.

I asked if he would move under the shade. He said no, he would take his drinks and lunch where he was.

I'm intent on letting the homeless lead, but I was not happy with this answer and was immediately looking in my car for a bribe. :)

When Lynn handed him his lunch, she felt a beautiful cool breeze coming out of the grate.

While still not good for sun burn, that cool breeze had to feel so good to him.

Before we left, we put towels in cold water and put them over his legs.

He drank three bottles of water before we left, and asked for three more. That did make me happy.

NOTE: The PopTarts were a huge hit today!

All Among Us has been on the streets since Sunday due to this extreme heat warning.

It's hard to explain what this heat does to a person who is living it 24/7 with no relief.

Add a bunch of bugs to the mix.

And mental illness and sometimes addiction.

Their food sources are over a mile away. Too hot to walk in these temps.

Their water source is a bit closer.

Heat plays bad tricks on mental illness.

Showing up and providing lunch, several cold drinks, ice, large body wipes, batteries for their fans, and often one other item they need . . . at least gives them a smiling face and someone who cares . . . and who they know will show up any day it's over 94 degrees.

A couple of tents were destroyed in the rain storm last week. I've added those to the list.

I had the honor today to serve the homeless with Kevin Cochran and Jennifer Joyce. If I am EVER in a foxhole, for any reason, I want to be in a foxhole with Jennifer and Kevin.

We delivered meals, cold drinks, OFF spray (two different kinds), body wipes, fans, batteries, picked up dirty laundry, loved on some old friends, and as always . . . had ice cold rags to go around people's necks.

It was a really good day . . .

Downtown Morning

While not a 100-degree day, it was a morning downtown that felt to be 100. The sun was so hot.

Today was a special day as we purchased two buckets of KFC with biscuits and divided them up for 16 meals. Everyone received two pieces of hot chicken, one biscuit, and either honey or jelly. With a choice of Gatorade, water, and/or protein drinks. Two each.

Of course, an ice-cold rag for around their neck. Always a favorite!! And body wipes. :)

It almost seemed like a holiday.

Toward the end, we had run out of food. The 16 meals fed one camp we serve.

Then we ran out of drinks a bit later.

What we still had were clean rags and ice water. We continued placing cold rags around people’s necks until no one else was in line. Part of this is the act of touch, placing the rag around their neck or on their head – and sharing that moment of glee and laughter with them.

Then we were down to ice water. Some people had their own cups, and we were able to fill their cups to the brim with cold ice water.

Even when I see the car as being empty, it still provides relief and some joy.

It is your donations that keep us going – thank you!!! The camp said we are the only ones with D batteries, fans, and bug spray – they ask I send and special shout out to the donors!

Today I celebrate 10 years will All Among Us.

What a beautiful, fulfilling, life-giving ride it has been.

"What Good Will I Do Today?"

I drove Cat downtown today to work, as all the roads leading to the Arch were blocked.

I had not planned on serving homeless this am, as my air-condition is broken, I did not sleep well, I had put in a ton of hours this week, and the temps were not going to be as brutal.

Cat asked me if I was going to catch the homeless we saw on the way home. I told her I did not know - as I heard the Gatorade and water sloshing around in my ice chest. And I knew this was not the answer she wanted from me.

Then, I stopped counting at 15 the people sleeping on sidewalks, parking lots, and benches made to keep homeless off of them.

The songs I had been singing about the good ole USA didn't seem to fit for these people.

Drove through McDonalds to pick up sausage and cheese biscuits. Already had cold liquids and cold towels.

I have a sign hanging about my door as I leave my home.

"What Good Will I Do Today?"

One man remembered me from earlier this week as the lady who passed out the fans that sprayed water - and asked if I had extra batteries - I did. Was glad to see him again - and glad he still had his fan.

Drove home feeling sad for these people. Without answers.

Feeling as if the work we do is a drop in a bucket. And yet, it is a drop in their small bucket. That does create a small wave of kindness and relief.
