In 2025 alone, the Michigan Department of Corrections reported 138 deaths among incarcerated people. So far in 2026, another 83 deaths have been reported.

Now, another Michigan family is waiting for answers.

On August 19, 36-year-old Kevin Joseph Kelly was found dead inside his cell at Bellamy Creek Correctional Facility. His death is being investigated as a suspected homicide.

Not every death behind bars is the result of violence or wrongdoing. But every death deserves transparency, accountability and answers.

At Firefly Advocates, we believe justice doesn't end when the courtroom doors close.

17 years in prison for a murder he did not commit.

Alberto Okoa was just 17 years old when he was arrested. He spoke Spanish and says he was pressured into signing a confession written in English, a language he could not read or understand.

That confession helped cost him 17 years of his life.

His story raises a critical question: How should our justice system protect people who cannot understand the language being used during an interrogation?
