AgeWays Nonprofit Senior Services Welcome! We’ve been helping seniors and their families in southeast Michigan for 50 years. Exciting News! So has our phone number.

The Area Agency on Aging 1-B is now AgeWays Nonprofit Senior Seniors. We think our new name reflects what we do best: Giving older adults the programs, services, and supports they need to age the way they choose. While our name has changed, our programs, people, and dedication to supporting older adults, adults with disabilities, and family caregivers remains the same. You can reach us at 800-852-7795 whenever you, or an older adult you know, needs assistance. Find out more at AgeWays.org/NewName.

Election Day is over, but what happens next?

From state budgets to local funding decisions, the weeks and months following an election can have a lasting impact on services older adults and their families rely on, including Meals on Wheels, in-home care, transportation, and caregiver support.

Our latest blog breaks down what happens after the votes are counted, when newly elected officials take office, and what it all means for aging services across southeast Michigan.

For nearly 50 years, she welcomed new faces into her classroom. Today, at 95, she still looks forward to meeting new faces — this time, through Meals on Wheels. ❤️

After a lifetime of making a difference in the lives of others, she's now finding nourishment, connection, and a familiar sense of joy in every delivery.

For older adults like her, Meals on Wheels delivers more than a nutritious meal. It brings a friendly face, a moment of connection, and the support to continue living independently at home.

This holiday season, you can make a difference in someone's life, too.

It's election day, and your voice is important. To help get you to the polls, SMART has made all fixed routes, SMART Flex and paratransit services free today. But if you are looking for even more inspiration to cast your ballot, our Advocacy Team has put together an excellent blog on why every election matters when it comes to senior services https://ow.ly/UTt25103lKs.)

When you're raising a family for the second time, moments for yourself can mean everything. 💙

Meet R, a veteran who, alongside his partner, stepped up to raise and eventually adopt their grandson.

Like many grandparents raising grandchildren, R has taken on the joys and challenges of parenting again. Through Grandparents Raising Grandchildren, an AgeWays contractor program, families like his can access support groups, parenting resources, and opportunities to connect with others who understand their experiences.

This summer, R participated in an intergenerational event at Independence Oaks, where he had the chance to ride an adaptive bicycle for the first time.

“I'm a 100% disabled veteran who loved riding bikes, but a bad back and old age put a stop to that. The adaptive tricycle brought that dream back!”

During National Family Caregivers Month, we're proud to recognize the grandparents and kinship caregivers who step up for their families every day, and the community programs that help support them along the way.

Real care comes with real questions.

When you're caring for someone you love, legal questions can arise when you least expect them. From guardianship and housing rights to estate planning and financial exploitation, navigating these issues can feel overwhelming.

The good news? You don't have to figure it all out alone.

Caregiving can be rewarding, but it can also be tiring and stressful.

Caregiver burnout can happen when stress builds up over time without enough rest or support. It may show up as feeling very tired, overwhelmed, or losing interest in things you enjoy.

Burnout can also affect sleep, mood, and overall health. Taking small steps, like asking for support or taking short breaks, can make caregiving feel more manageable.
