On this date in 1914, the RMS Empress of Ireland sank in the St. Lawrence Seaway after colliding with a Norwegian cargo ship in dense fog — becoming Canada's deadliest peacetime maritime disaster.

The ship went under in just 14 minutes, claiming 1,012 lives. Among those aboard was Jennie Newton of Antler, ND, traveling to visit relatives in Britain. When news reached home, she was reported as a survivor, but sadly it wasn’t true. Jennie was one of the few dead who were actually recovered and identified.

The disaster happened just two years after the Titanic.
