Watermedia Exhibition Doubles Up

There’s more than a new name involved in the Red River Watercolor Society’s Juried Watermedia Exhibition, which opens Tuesday, Aug. 18, at Minnesota State University Moorhead.
For one thing, the 41-year-old group is now known by a new name – Red River Artist Network.
And for another, the days of this year’s 33rd National Juried Watermedia Exhibition of paintings in watercolor and similar media offer a double treat.
This is the year when the juried exhibition is again going online. Artists have submitted their entries online, where judge Carrie Waller determined those to be included and awarded prizes. Viewers will visit the show on the internet or in MSUM’s Roland Dille Center for the Arts, where two large television monitors will display the successful entries. They can also log onto the group’s website, https://www.redriverws.org/.
It’s the fourth time the annual exhibition has been posted on the internet. The practice began in 2020, when COVID restrictions forced it out of the gallery and onto the web – an innovation that turned out to please many entrants, who could avoid shipping their creations across the country. Since then, the virtual exhibits have alternated annually with real-life shows.
This year, however, the virtual watermedia exhibition will be accompanied by a real-life show in the same gallery where the other is showing on monitors. Opening shortly after the national reveal, ‘Time to Shine” fills the Diederich Art Gallery with works by many of the 250 members of the 41-year-old association.
