We’re thrilled about another successful Halloween on the Green with record crowds — huge thanks to Fairfield Community Services, Shop Fairfield (Experience Fairfield), and the Town of Fairfield, CT DPW for their incredible help with planning and coordination.

This was our 10th year hosting this free, family-friendly celebration on the Fairfield Museum Commons, and we’re proud to share that we welcomed over 6,000 attendees! 👻

The Fairfield Museum was recently gifted an extraordinary painting, “Southport, CT, Harbor in Winter, 1890,” by contemporary artist Christopher Blossom, and generously donated by prominent collector Hort Spitzer.

The painting captures Southport’s working waterfront during an era when the harbor was a thriving center of maritime trade. Visitors can see it on view in the Museum’s main history exhibition, “Creating Community.”

Born in 1956, Blossom began painting in high school before studying at the Parsons School of Design in New York City. In 1977, he received the Scholarship Gold Medal from the Society of Illustrators. In 1991, he was awarded a Gold Medal by the National Academy of Western Art, where he holds the distinction of being its only elected marine artist.

Blossom's passion for history and his unique ability to visualize in three dimensions has allowed him to recreate scenes from maritime history with genuineness and feeling that is unequaled among his contemporaries.

A wonderful evening last night at the New Britain Museum of American Art celebrating this year's recipients of the 2026 Connecticut League of Museums Awards of Merit.

The Fairfield Museum was recognized for two of our very special exhibitions: “Portraits of Fairfield” and “Fairfield in 1776: Revolution & Resilience.”

As we commemorate the 250th Anniversary of the Declaration of Independence throughout 2026, the Fairfield Museum will periodically share Fairfield’s fascinating connections to significant moments during the American Revolution.

After their defeats in Brooklyn and Harlem Heights, General Washington had moved the Continental Army’s base to White Plains, New York. British General Howe, determined to defeat Washington once and for all, followed the Continental Army as they made their way north from Brooklyn throughout the fall.

On October 28, 1776, a firefight erupted as British troops reached White Plains. Fairfield’s own Brigadier General Gold Selleck Silliman was among the soldiers attempting to slow the British advance. Fighting alongside him were Fairfielders Elijah Abel, David Dimon, Wakeman Burr, Joseph Bulkley, and David Osborn.

In a letter that Silliman wrote home to his wife Mary, he described his harrowing experience in the battle: “thro a most furious Fire from the Enemy, for a half a Mile in length, for so far there was nothing to cover us from it; I can’t compare the constant whizzing of Bullets all round me to anything more natural than being in the Middle of a Swarm of Bees.” Somehow, Gold Selleck Silliman left the battle unscathed. Mary noted, “amidst showers of rolling bullets not one so much as touched his garments.”

British and Hessian soldiers broke through and General Washington was defeated yet again at the Battle of White Plains. The Continental Army was forced to retreat to New Jersey.

On October 15, we were proud to co-host a special panel discussion with The Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts at Fairfield University, bringing together diverse perspectives on the future of American democracy.

Using the landmark report “Our Common Purpose: Reinventing American Democracy for the 21st Century” as a starting point, our event explored how we can strengthen our democracy, find common ground, and address the challenges facing our nation today.

As part of the Fairfield Museum’s commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, this timely conversation offered an opportunity to reflect on our shared civic life and consider how we can build a stronger democratic future together.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for this important discussion, and to our panelists for sharing their insights and expertise across academia, public service, and civic life. We hope you found the conversation informative and inspiring, and we look forward to welcoming you to more of our upcoming events and programs!

Nobody Men: Neutrality & Loyalties in the American Revolution with Travis Glasson

At least one‑third of the colonial population were neutral during the American Revolution, yet they have rarely been featured in narratives that shape our ideas about the conflict. By following a single transatlantic family, the Crugers, historian Travis Glasson puts neutrals—the “nobody men”—at the center of this tumultuous period’s history.

Drawing from his new book Nobody Men: Neutrality, Loyalties, and Family in the American Revolution, Travis Glasson, Associate Professor of History at Temple University, will explore the overlooked individuals of the Revolutionary era who fell between patriot and loyalist—highlighting how their choices shaped the Atlantic world.
