Freshman students from University of Evansville jumped right into the dirty work of demoing 524 Madison Ave as part of the annual New Student Day of Service! They tore down a chimney and removed brick from the basement. By the end of the day, they had filled a 30-yard dumpster!

It was great to see these students in action and serving their new local community. 🧡

Jesus did not come into the world with his divine power and splendor on display. He didn't even come as a wealthy or powerful human. Instead, He came as a helpless baby, born in an obscure town in a small and seemingly insignificant corner of the ancient world.

Notice the structure of His work. His ministry was hyper-localized, he focused on a specific people and place. He placed geographic limits on His activities. His mission was cosmic in scope, but His ministry was in the context of real people, in the flow of their lives, embedded into their story.

Our sending ought to take on the exact same shape. We don't need to be everywhere; we just need to be fully present where we are sent.

Are you a human doing... or a human being?

In church and outreach culture, it’s so easy to get caught up in programs, projects, and ministries. We look to a serve day calendar for opportunities to show up for neighbors. But look closely at the Gospels. So much of Jesus’ ministry happened during ordinary, unprogrammed moments:

-Reclining at the table over a meal
-Walking slowly from town to town
-Attending local celebrations with neighbors
-Resting, stepping back, and listening

Incarnational ministry isn't about running another busy project. It’s about the ministry of presence, slowing down enough to build real relationships and listen to our neighbors.

Sometimes the most holy thing you can do today is simply show up, sit down, and listen.

The Word became flesh and blood, and moved into the neighborhood (John 1:14 MSC)

With this paraphrase in the Message translation of the Bible, Eugene Peterson made a theological mystery more accessible, helping give us a connection point to the unfathomable thought of the Trinity, God’s cosmic plan of redemption, and how we might join in that work.

As Christians, we are called to step into the mission of God. When practicing neighborhood revitalization as a ministry of Jesus, it is crucial to understand the Incarnation because it informs and shapes both why and how we go about doing this good work.
