🎊Happy Juneteenth! 🎊June 19 celebrates the emancipation of African American slaves in the United States. The day commemorates June 19, 1865, when Union troops announced the freedom of more than 250,000 enslaved African Americans in Texas - 2 years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation at the end of the American Civil War.
Juneteenth also celebrates the long American tradition of fighting for equal rights under the law for all persons, regardless of skin color, race or ethnicity. When we celebrate Juneteenth, we acknowledge that this work is still ongoing - and that exploitation and versions of modern slavery still exist today, impacting many vulnerable communities. Ensuring every person in our country can enjoy "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness" and rights guaranteed in the 🇺🇸 Constitution will take all of us working towards that future.
We do so in our work, and invite you to join us in serving vulnerable populations, advocating for them to our legislators and fellow citizens, with our votes, and by sharing about Constitutional rights. These and many other actions that seem small still contribute to change in our spheres of influence.
Join us in celebrating Juneteenth today! Come participate in one of the many community events commemorating this important day in history👇🏾
