Good music. Great people. Even better energy. 🎶

Listening Hours at The Land School brought us together to slow down, tune in, and experience music the way it’s meant to be felt, together.

Across two special sessions in A Listening Space, D-Composed ensemble members invited us into the music, ideas, and experiences shaping their artistry.

Anya Brumfield joined her father, Antoine Brumfield, for a listening session centered around *Earth, Heaven, or Hell*, Antoine’s solo project exploring the human experience through musical storytelling.

Khelsey Zarraga and Wilfred Farquharson shared selections connected to their current research and creative practices, opening up conversation around their influences and ongoing work as performing artists.

Thank you to everyone who listened, shared, and spent time in community with us at The Land School. 🤎

Until the next listen. We hope you’ll be in the room. 🎶

Celebrating freedom through rest 😴

This past Juneteenth, we gathered at The Land School ( Rebuild ) for our 3rd Annual Freedom Lullabies with Tricia Hersey ( The Nap Ministry )!

This was the first ever Freedom Lullabies event held at The Land School. Getting to co-create a safe space for Black folks to engage in communal rest, imagination, and liberation was deeply healing. ✨

We also enjoyed performing the works of Black composers such as Florence Price, Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson, and our very own Seth Pae, while Tricia read revolutionary texts from Zora Neale Hurston, bell hooks, and Octavia Butler.

We appreciate Tricia and The Nap Ministry for working with us on this immersive experience. We are so grateful to everyone who came out to rest, reflect, and celebrate with us!

As Summer settles in, join us at The Land School for sonic refuge throughout the month of July.

A Listening Space at The Land School is open every Thursday through Saturday, 12 PM - 8 PM, offering space and time to gather, listen deeply, and experience sound as we, together with guest selectors, share records from across our collections.

This month, we’re also pleased to present special listening sessions and programs in collaboration with our creative partners and friends of Rebuild, each offering distinct invitations to embody, experience, and witness the power of music and artistic possibility.

Save the dates, reserve your spot using the links in our bio, and join us in July. We look forward to being present together.

Here’s a look back at ‘Love Is...’ 🤎

Earlier this month, we worked with the Poetry Foundation ( Poetry Foundation ) and Rebuild Foundation ( Rebuild ) for ‘Love Is’ — a program that invited 6 local poets to explore their own unique definitions of Love, live at The Land School.

Since love is not a monolith, we wanted to create a space that honored its many forms and artistic expressions. The program featured compositions from Ahmed Al Abaca, Daniel Bernard Roumain, and arrangements by our own Khelsey Zarraga. It was so exciting getting to use the music of Black composers to amplify these words and stories! ✨📖

A huge thank you to the featured poets of ‘Love Is’:
Shawnee Dez ( Shawn Day )
Faylita Hicks ( Faylita Hicks )
Raych Jackson ( awkward connoisseur )
Davon Clark ( Davon Clark )
Marvin Tate ( Marvin Tate )
Shanta Nurullah ( Shanta Nurullah )

We also want to give a special shout-out to the South Side Home Movie Project ( South Side Home Movie Project ) for allowing us to use home-movie footage from their archive in the performance!

Here’s a ✨cinematic✨ look back at our night with Jlin ( Jlin ) at The Land School!

We had so much fun collaborating with Jlin, who is a former steel factory worker, Pulitzer Prize nominee, and influential composer in the world of electronic music! Sharing the night with her in The Land School’s listening space was such an amazing, collective experience for our community! 🤎

The program included pieces by Jlin, Pamela Z, and original compositions from our ensemble members. We loved getting to improvise live with Jlin during the event, and had a blast transitioning from the concert into a full-blown party with our audiences — something which was a first for us!

We are so grateful to Jlin, the team at The Land School ( Rebuild ), and Pomegranate Arts for helping us host such a special night of music, community, and togetherness.

A huge thank you to everyone who came out across Chicago to celebrate 100 years of Miles Davis! 🎺🖤

We had the absolute best time honoring the music and legacy of Miles Davis — who remains one of the most influential bandleaders, musicians, and composers of our time. We were so happy to have Seth Pae ( Seth Allen ) put together such an incredible program for a monumental occasion!

We are so grateful to Rebuild , BandWith Chicago , and Chicago Public Library for helping bring this tribute to our community! Honoring the history of Black artists and composers is a core part of our mission, and we love doing it with others!
