‼️PANLEUKOPENIA CLOSURE – October 2026 ‼️
At this time, the RCHS shelter is closed for all cat intake/admissions, adoptions, and foster placements until further notice.
Little Hobi came to us as a stray and appeared healthy but became ill suddenly and has tested positive for the panleukopenia virus.
This is a highly contagious disease with an incubation period of up to two weeks. Cats can appear healthy and may not test positive until they begin showing symptoms.
Symptoms include high fever, lethargy, vomiting, and diarrhea.
Hobi was housed with part of our shelter population before becoming symptomatic, so our team is implementing required disease control measures across the entire facility.
Hobi is receiving veterinary care and improving.

If you would like to donate bleach, trash bags, scrub brushes, litter, litter scoops and boxes, or enrichment toys, you can leave them on the bench at the shelter or ship them to 195 Weese Street Extension, Elkins, WV 26241.
We have suggestions for enrichment toys on our Amazon and Walmart wish lists.
Thank you for your patience as we focus on and prioritize the health and safety of the cats and kittens in our care.
The shelter will be closed today, Friday, October 23rd.
Canine adoptions will resume tomorrow, Saturday, October 24th.
To help keep everyone safe, all visitors are asked to come to the front door and not move around the buildings or property until greeted by staff.
