In honor of World Bicycle Day, we’re celebrating the power of the bicycle to transform how we move, connect, and experience the world around us.

Right now the DOH is in the process of renewing the Statewide WV Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan and invites YOU to share your thoughts. There are several in-person opportunities planned around the state this month and an open online survey here - https://engagekh.mysocialpinpoint.com/walk-ride-wv.

We’re excited to share an opportunity to spend your summer making a real impact in the Elkins area through outdoor recreation, community engagement, and trail development.

Elkins Area Shared Trails (EAST) is seeking a Capacity Building Summer Associate (AmeriCorps VISTA Summer Associate) to support our growing efforts to expand access to trails, strengthen community connections, and build organizational capacity. Link is in the comments.

📍 Location: Elkins, WV
📅 Term: June 1 – August 9, 2026 (300-hour minimum-time service)

This role is ideal for someone who wants hands-on experience in nonprofit development, community engagement, and outdoor recreation planning. As a Summer Associate, you’ll work closely with our all-volunteer Board of Directors to help move key initiatives forward.

Today was a win! 🤘

EAST was able to support the with volunteer labor under the skilled guidance of the to help build the South Haddix Connector Trail.

This collaboration is helping us to lean hard into outdoor recreation development and stewardship as an economic and social driver for WV, and we are just getting started.

It may not look like trail building conditions outside today, but the forecast for Saturday is partly sunny and 70. EAST is supporting volunteer engagement for this workday, but there is no need to be a member. Everyone is invited and welcome, but asked to pre-register for liability reasons and to make sure we bring enough hot drinks and snacks. See all the details below.

Join the Smith OEDC, the U.S. Forest Service, and Elkins Area Shared Trails (EAST) for a hands-on day of trail building in the Monongahela National Forest.

Participants will learn basic trail building techniques while helping construct the South Haddix Trail, an exciting addition to the growing trail network near Elkins. Whether you are interested in learning how sustainable trails are built or simply want to lend a hand, this is a chance to work alongside experienced trail stewards and contribute to West Virginia’s expanding outdoor recreation infrastructure.
