How is this NOT a concentration camp? Starvation. Beatings. Disease. Guards betting on who'd die next. Dozens of 911 calls. A man asphyxiated by guards. A medical examiner who called it homicide.

That's what an Associated Press investigation just uncovered at Camp East Montana, a sprawling tent city on Fort Bliss army base in El Paso built to cage roughly 3,000 people at a time.

Trigger warning: this piece includes descriptions of death, violence, self-harm, and abuse in detention.

The AP obtained data from over 130 emergency calls, and the picture they paint is one of systematic neglect on a staggering scale.

A man sobbing after being beaten by another detainee. A doctor reporting someone bashing his head into a wall while expressing suicidal thoughts. A nurse calling about a pregnant woman in severe pain who also had COVID.

At least 20 seizure emergencies, some causing serious head injuries. Victims ranging from a 19-year-old who fell from a bunk to a 79-year-old struggling to breathe.

Detainees described losing weight because there simply wasn't enough food. One woman showed a congresswoman a plate of scrambled eggs that were still frozen in the center. Juice, fruit, and milk disappeared from meals entirely until people protested.

A man from Ecuador walked around for weeks with broken bones visibly poking up under the skin of his forearm.

Two people died. One, a 55-year-old Cuban man, was killed by guards who claimed they were "restraining" him. The medical examiner ruled it a homicide by asphyxiation. Another, a 36-year-old Nicaraguan man, took his own life days after being swept up in the Minnesota raids.

The company running all of this? Acquisition Logistics LLC, whose largest previous federal contract was $16 million and whose CEO appears to operate out of his private home.

They got $1.3 BILLION of your money for this. Now ICE is quietly preparing to shut it down less than eight months after it opened.

Rep. Veronica Escobar put it plainly: people should be moved by the cruelty, but if they're not, the fraud and corruption should do the trick.

She's right. Hold every last one of them accountable.

So far the war on Iran has cost $9.4 billion.

That's $1 billion per day.

$41,666,667 per hour.

$11,574 per second.

Thousands of lives lost.

People don't want this. They want a living wage. They want healthcare. They want to be able to afford a home. They want their basic needs met.
