Recently, the Historical Society welcomed the 4th graders from John Marshall Elementary School to Historic Clinton Academy for the first field trips of the school year! 🤗

Students stepped back in time to learn about the history of the three buildings on the property and experience topics of study of East Hampton students in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. 🏫🎒 The 4th grade engaged with navigational items from the collection including a scope and a surveyor's transit and created their own maps after learning about the importance of landmarks and compass directions. 🗺️🧭 Students learned to write with quill pens and viewed historic examples of scrimshaw which they used as inspiration for their own designs! 🪶📜

On Friday night, we welcomed a wonderful group to Clinton Academy to learn more about East Hampton's whaling history and the art of Scrimshaw with artist ! 🐋👏

As sailors were inspired by the scenery around them, important people and things from back home, attendees drew on the Claus Hoie watercolors, imagery of nature, and even Thomas the Train in their own scrimshaw creations! 🤗 Thank you to all the attendees and to Peter Spacek who made this event possible.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for the Semiquincentennial History Festival at Mulford Farm this past Saturday! 🇺🇸✨ We had a fantastic turnout of visitors who stopped by the farm to learn more about East Hampton's connection to the American Revolution, despite the weather.

The event featured an assortment of activities for people of all ages including reenactments, music, skits, 18th century craft demonstrations, children's games, and more. 🎶🕯️🎨 Thank you to everyone who helped make this event a success!

How were candles, clothes, and nails made during the Revolutionary Era? Join us at the History Festival on October 17 to find out! Watch a variety of demonstrations of historic artisanal practices by a talented group of local artists and craftspeople. 👏

In the 1770s, dozens of weavers lived in East Hampton, including David Mulford, Jr. At the History Festival, you’ll see Fen Youmans, a Mulford family descendant, demonstrate how weaving was done in the 18th century. 🧶

James DeMartis, a blacksmith and metalworker based in Springs, will work a forge on Mulford Farm and demonstrate how Revolutionary Era tools and objects were created. ⚒️🔥

Peter Spacek, an artist who works in Montauk and East Hampton, will demonstrate the traditional carving practice of scrimshaw, used often by East Hampton whalers on long sea voyages. 🐋⚓️

The day before the History Festival on October 16, Peter will lead a workshop at Clinton Academy where you can create your own carvings and learn more about the history of Scrimshaw. 🤩 Register by clicking the link in our bio!

Janice Badkin will demonstrate bayberry candle making, a colonial era tradition meant to bring luck to friends during the holiday season. 🕯️✨

Discover the art of scrimshaw and its connection to East Hampton's whaling history next Friday, October 16! 🐋🎨

Join us for a special artist's talk and hands-on workshop with Peter Spacek, who will explore the history of scrimshaw, an art form traditionally created by sailors who engraved images onto whale teeth and bones during long voyages.

Learn how Peter puts a modern spin on this historic art form using repurposed materials like old surfboards, watch a demonstration of his work and even try your hand at creating your own scrimshaw!

The workshop will take place at Clinton Academy, surrounded by Claus Hoie's Watercolors of Whaling exhibition. 🖼️
