Artists and Writers Charity Softball Game

Artists and Writers Charity Softball Game The Artists and Writers Game began as a summer picnic in 1948. It's a fun day for all! Get involved! Everyone brought a dish. Some brought drinks.

With the help of our friends, this all-volunteer effort has evolved into a significant supporter of local East Hampton charities! This game had modest and lighthearted beginnings in 1948; it has since evolved into an important source of revenue for charities providing vital human services to Long Island’s East End. Funding in this difficult economic environment makes it important to continue to e

nlarge this effort. The game was originally played by artists including Franz Kline, Willem de Kooning, Philip Pavia, Jackson Po***ck, and Joan Mitchell. Two writers joined the picnic, Barney Rosset of Grove Press (who was seeing Joan Mitchell) and art critic Harold Rosenberg. All this took place in Wilfrid Zogbaum’s front yard. The artists had moved to Springs and the East End for cheap rent, larger studios and an easier life. They talked of art, gossiped, ate, drank, and shared a camaraderie. They recalled a glorious time; the war was over, the Depression waning, and more artists’ work was being shown in New York galleries. Some were successful in sales and reputation. Some drank too much. Most were just young artists anxious to be part of the emerging art scene. Writers joined the artists in the ’60’s and ’70’s. Irwin Shaw, Willie Morris, James Jones, Jimmy Ernst and Carl Stokes, the mayor of Cleveland were among the group that expanded to include politicians, actors, musicians, publishers, editors and television personalities. The game has included governors, mayors, senators and a Supreme Court justice.

10 days away from the Artists & Writers Softball Game, we’re featuring Andy Friedman, who has been a member of the Writers team.

On August 28, 2025, Topps baseball card company will release Topps x Shoebox Treasures by Andy Friedman, marking his fourth complete set of baseball card paintings.

This set features Garbage Pail Kids, Mars Attacks, Allen & Ginter, and ’51 Bowman. A short-printed card showcasing one of his landscape paintings is also included.

What makes this release especially unique is that all 140 original, card-sized paintings are individually numbered by Topps and randomly inserted into packs for collectors to win.

While Andy won’t be able to make it to this year’s game, we’re proud to have him as part of this incredible community—and even prouder to celebrate his continued impact on both art and baseball culture.
