FAQ: What is the origin of Hamptons Pride?

Thanks for asking! Hamptons Pride first began as an op-ed in the East Hampton Star.

In 2020, writer and teacher Tom House penned the article “What Kind of Bench?” in response to a proposed memorial bench in honor of The Miracle Mile, a stretch of Wainscott that was home to a series of LGBTQ+ owned-and-friendly businesses and establishments in the late 20th century.

In the article, House wrote “history is written by the living, and many of the voices that would speak for (the Miracle Mile) are long gone. And now in their absence it seems some of those writing the next chapter have lost a sense of scale, partly because they’re forgetting the area’s history.”

Following the article, House went on to found Hamptons Pride, which began by coordinating with the Wainscott Citizens Advisory Committee and the Town of East Hampton on the The Hamptons PRIDE Monument at Wainscott Green to preserve the East End's LGBTQ+ history, and hosting the first Hamptons Pride Parade the following year in East Hampton Village.

The Hamptons Pride Archive seeks to showcase and remember "The Miracle Mile," home to a robust community of LGBTQ+ people and allies, and the places they gathered across the East End from the 1950's through the early 2000's.

Stretching across Montauk Highway in Wainscott, the Miracle Mile was comprised of bars, restaurants, and nightclubs that were friendly to or built by and for the LGBTQ+ community. From the 1950’s through the early 2000’s, businesses along the Miracle Mile provided the space for LGBTQ+ people and allies to gather, celebrate, organize, and connect.

Today, Hamptons Pride honors the legacy of the Miracle Mile through the establishment of the Hamptons Pride Monument at Wainscott Green in East Hampton, the former site of The Swamp & Annex, the last surviving members of the Miracle Mile.

Notable locations along the Miracle Mile included: Out of This World, The Attic, and The Swamp & Annex.

You're Invited! Remember those who we have lost during Hamptons Pride's Third Annual World AIDS Day Observances.

Since 1988, World AIDS Day has raised global awareness of HIV and the AIDS pandemic through community events and engagement. We began our observances in 2024 with the Hamptons Pride Names Project: remembrances, reflections, and a ceremonial reading of the names of East End community members who have lost their lives to the virus, alongside a display of Quilts from the National AIDS Memorial.

This year, Hamptons Pride, in partnership with St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, presents a display of over 40 Quilts from the National AIDS Memorial, with a public ceremony honoring East End residents lost to the AIDS pandemic, including a “Calling of the Names” processional. Additional programming to be announced.

Friends, look who graced us with an awesome video hello and film intro yesterday!

We're so grateful to the one-and-only Nathan Lane, and to everyone who joined us yesterday for "The Birdcage" as part of the Hamptons Pride Film Series! What a terrific crowd. We had a blast laughing and singing with everyone!
