i-tri Girls

i-tri empowers middle school girls to believe in themselves, and that they are capable and strong i-tri girls are not triathletes. That makes i-tri different.

i-tri focuses on working with middle-school girls because research shows that the largest drop in self-esteem occurs during early adolescence. 69% of elementary school-aged girls reported being “happy the way I am.” That figure plummets to 29% for high school girls. i-tri girls learn to believe in themselves, and that can change everything. Along the journey to the finish line of a youth distance

triathlon, our girls discover that they are capable, strong and brave. They make connections that show them that while they are unique, they’re definitely not alone. Side by side, with new friends, i-tri girls learn to go inward to find their own strengths and to help others find theirs. Rather, we use the sport of triathlon to give them a goal that is seemingly impossible, that is overwhelming and scary. And then we give them the physical and mental tools to achieve that goal. All equipment, training and transportation are provided for free to every girl because we believe personal circumstances should not hold any girl back from reaching her potential. It isn’t about where you come from. It’s about where you are going. No one has to ask for a scholarship or a favor, and we empower our girls to help themselves, as they participate in fundraising throughout the year.

On Tuesday, June 9, i-tri celebrated 17 years of empowering middle school girls through the sport of triathlon. In a fun filled evening at of cocktails 🍸️, light bites, music, and amazing generosity from our community, i-tri’s Power Ball was a wonderful success. 🪩🩷✨

Whether it was bidding on our silent auction prizes, throwing tickets into the bags for the Chance auction 🎟️, or participating in our live Powerball drawing (hot pink ping-pong balls!) 🤩 our guests fully took advantage of all the fun of the evening!

One of the most amazing moments came when i-tri alum and current university of Richmond rising junior, Sophia Rodriguez, told us in her own heartfelt words what i-tri has meant in her life. 💞 Speaking about her initial fear of participating in i-tri, specifically about her fear of riding a bike, Sophia told us, “It was never about the bike,” her words truly touched everyone in attendance.

For 17 years, i-tri has been doing the work of empowering middle school girls through the sport of triathlon. 🏊‍♀️🚴‍♀️🏃‍♀️ Our team has always known that sport is a powerful tool that isn't only beneficial for the body, but also for the mind. And now, there are multiple studies to back this up.

📝 A detailed study of over 11,000 kids, aged 9-13, shows that those who play sports have fewer mental health incidents then those who do not play (thank you to our partners at for guiding us to this study!).
