Today, on World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, we join communities around the world in raising awareness about abuse, neglect, and exploitation affecting older adults.

Elder abuse can take many forms, including emotional abuse, financial exploitation, neglect, physical abuse, and isolation, and often goes unreported. According to the World Health Organization, approximately 1 in 6 people age 60 and older experience some form of abuse each year.

At The Retreat, our Abuse in Later Life (ALL) Program works to strengthen Suffolk County's response to elder abuse by bringing together professionals across systems to improve collaboration, identify barriers to effective intervention, and promote best practices that enhance victim safety and accountability.

By increasing awareness and working together, we can help ensure older adults are treated with the dignity, respect, and safety they deserve.

Pride Month is a celebration of identity, resilience, and community. It is also an opportunity to raise awareness about issues that impact LGBTQ+ individuals, including intimate partner violence.

LGBTQ+ people experience intimate partner violence at alarming rates, yet many survivors face additional barriers when seeking support, including fear of discrimination, stigma, or not being believed.

Abuse can happen in any relationship. At The Retreat, we believe every survivor deserves safety, support, and access to resources.

As of May 19, survivors of intimate image abuse have expanded rights under federal law. The TAKE IT DOWN Act requires online platforms and social media companies to remove nonconsensual intimate images within 48 hours after a survivor requests removal. If a platform fails to respond or does not provide a removal process, survivors can now report it directly to the Federal Trade Commission through their new reporting website: takeitdown.ftc.gov

Nonconsensual intimate images can include:

• Images or videos originally obtained with or without consent.
• AI-generated or manipulated intimate images or videos.

This law is an important step forward in addressing technology-facilitated abuse and supporting survivors of digital harm.

If you or someone you know is experiencing digital abuse, The Retreat's 24/7 multilingual hotline is available at (631) 329-2200
