Fresh produce. Handmade goods. Friendly faces.

There's nothing quite like spending a morning at the local farmers market. Every purchase supports local growers, makers, and entrepreneurs while keeping more dollars right here in our community.

What's the first thing you look for when you visit the market?

📊 Building a healthier La Plata County starts with understanding our community's health.

Local First Foundation is excited to share our new Healthcare Performance Dashboard, a powerful tool that gives our community a clearer picture of where we're thriving and where we have opportunities to improve.

The dashboard compares La Plata County to Colorado, the nation, and similar rural communities across 24 key measures, including healthcare access, affordability, outcomes, prevention, workforce capacity, and the social factors that shape our health.

It highlights where we're doing well, such as life expectancy, childhood immunizations, and healthcare workforce capacity. It also identifies opportunities to improve in areas like dental care, cancer screenings, mental health, and healthcare affordability.

This isn't just about healthcare. It's about using data to inform decisions, strengthen partnerships, and build a healthier future for everyone in La Plata County.

Food is something that connects all of us, but it's also a powerful economic engine.

Every time we choose a local farmer, rancher, food producer, or independent grocer, we're helping keep dollars circulating in our community and supporting the people who make Southwest Colorado such a special place to live.

This month, our Durango Herald column explores the many organizations and businesses that make our local food system work—from farms and markets to nonprofits and community partnerships—and why that work matters for the future of our region.

I'm grateful to be part of a community that understands good food is more than what's on our plates. It's about local jobs, resilient businesses, stronger connections, and a thriving local economy.

And next time you're shopping for groceries or planning a meal, consider choosing local. 🌱
