Founded in 1986, we are the Four Corners’ homegrown, locally focused environmental advocacy organization. We are drawn to the big, intractable, controversial topics others prefer to ignore, issues like climate change, energy development, air quality, water quality, and the protection of wild lands and rivers.

We're urging you to VOTE NO on Amendment 83. Why? Because hunting and fishing are already legal in Colorado. Amendment 83 doesn't protect them. It moves wildlife decisions from voters, CPW, and the legislature into the courts, locks vague language into our constitution, and is backed by out-of-state special interests.

Colorado just made history. It's the first state in the nation to adopt rigorous methane standards for oil and gas monitoring, venting, and flaring. In a unanimous vote, the Air Quality Control Commission affirmed new rules that hold the industry to modern technological standards, cutting methane emissions by roughly 30,000 tons a year. That's the equivalent of taking... drumroll... 500,000 cars off the road per year! We applaud Colorado for leading the nation in protecting our environment and public health. 👏

The Trump administration is proposing to once again weaken federal protections for wetlands and streams.

The Army Corps regulates development that would impact these resources when they are connected to major rivers and water bodies, “Waters of the United States." (WOTUS) In 2023, the Supreme Court narrowed jurisdiction to waters with a surface connection, eliminating protections for wetlands and streams connected by groundwater. The new proposal narrows federal jurisdiction further to those with a year-round surface connection, removing protections for an estimated 94% of the nation’s wetlands and 79% of streams.

Colorado is the first state in the country to take the reins on wetlands regulation, filling the gap left by the feds. SJCA successfully advocated for the new state wetlands regulation program last year and is following through as Colorado’s Water Quality Control Division considers its first test cases.

Over a decade ago, this air quality was par for the course in Northern New Mexico. With two coal power plants at full capacity, the skies were often hazy with smog. Since the closure and demolition of San Juan Generating Station, this has changed for the better. It's easy to get lost in the bad news, the difficult headlines, and to lose sight of the hard work that's gone on behind the scenes to progress this once dubbed 'Energy Sacrifice Zone' to a more just and equitable energy future.

With Mike Eisenfeld having recently celebrated 20 years (!!) with San Juan Citizens Alliance, we want to recognize just how much he has dedicated his career to cleaner air in the Four Corners, helping all of us (literally) breathe easier. This is no small feat.

There are also two upcoming events where you can show your support: Sept. 15 - Regular City Council Meeting - Sustainability Manager Marty Pool will present on the composting initiative, with public comment open. If you can attend and speak up, this is the moment // Oct. 6 - Study Session - The City's consultants (Resource Recycling Systems & Eco-Cycle) present their findings on compost program options. No public comment at this one, but a strong turnout still sends a clear message of support from our community.

💥 LPEA is about to make one of the biggest decisions our co-op will face in the next 15 years — and members have a real chance to weigh in. 💥

Our current wholesale power contract with Mercuria Energy America expires in 2030. Staff have proposed replacing it with a new mix of gas and wind, including at least 25 MW of gas (with room to scale up). LPEA says this is the best balance of cost and carbon reduction, and we think it’s important to dig into the details as an engaged community.

This decision shapes LPEA's power supply — and its cost and climate goals — for the next 15+ years. Attend the Town Hall Meeting this Monday, September 14th, from 5:30–7 pm at LPEA’s Durango Offices (45 Stewart St.) or virtually via Zoom (linked here: https://ow.ly/3LBt50ZMo7u).

What an amazing event 🫶 Thank you, Patagonia Telluride and Sheep Mountain Alliance, for including us in your Water in the West Series. Zak Podmore gave an incredibly illuminating talk on the changing landscape of the Colorado River and the possibility of a post-Lake Powell future. If you haven't read Zak Podmore's book Life After Deadpool, we highly recommend it!
