San Juan Citizens Alliance

San Juan Citizens Alliance SJCA advocates for clean air, pure water, and healthy lands & wildlife in the San Juan Basin.

San Juan Citizens Alliance advocates for clean air, pure water, and healthy lands - the foundations of resilient communities, ecosystems and economies in the San Juan Basin. Founded in 1986, we are the Four Corners’ homegrown, locally focused environmental advocacy organization. We are drawn to the big, intractable, controversial topics others prefer to ignore, issues like climate change, energy development, air quality, water quality, and the protection of wild lands and rivers.

So much of SJCA's work is best measured by what you don't see in our landscape.

From the proposed Desert Rock Power Plant in Northern New Mexico to hundreds of coalbed methane gas wells in the HD Mountains east of Bayfield, we've spent 40 years going to bat for this beloved corner of the world. None of that happens without you.

Thank you for standing with us, decade after decade. We aren't going anywhere. In fact, we still have this landline! ❤️

If you care about the future of Pagosa's recreation, conservation, and public lands projects, take a moment to give them your feedback! The Draft Strategic Recreation & Conservation Plan for the Pagosa Area Recreation Coalition (PARC) is available now, and we want your thoughts! 🗯️

There are two main ways to provide feedback:
💥 In-person Open House. The open house will be held on Tuesday, June 3rd at the PLPOA Clubhouse, 230 Port Ave. 2 PM- 7 PM. Stop by anytime during the event to discuss the plan, answer questions related to management and funding priorities, meet with the leadership team members, and share your thoughts.
💥 Online survey form. If you can’t make it, or want to provide your feedback online, the online survey asks the same questions that will be available at the Open House event.

The draft plan and feedback survey are available at https://pagosaparc.org/

The LPEA Election results are in! ☀️ Incumbent and Board President Nicole Pitcher returns for another 3-year term on the LPEA board, representing District 3. She is joined by newcomers Jenn Jenkins for District 3, Greg Barber for District 2, and John Purser for District 4.

This was a hard-fought election cycle, and we could not be more grateful to all of the community members who showed up and cast their vote for cleaner, more affordable energy. With some close wins and close losses, we are reminded of how crucial each and every voice is in this election.

We are excited to see what unfolds as our board navigates LPEA's recent departure of Tri-State Energy. Here's to more local, clean energy opportunities!

Your voice is needed! Contact Representative Jeff Hurd today using our action alert, and urge him to oppose the joint resolution attacking Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. Rep. Hurd is a key vote in Congress on this issue. He needs to stand strong for the protections of our public lands.

We're excited to share that Ryan Huggins will be joining San Juan Citizens Alliance as our new Executive Director! 💥 SJCA's longtime leader, Mark Pearson, is retiring and passing the torch to Ryan this June.

Ryan brings a deep understanding of the Alliance’s mission and strong ties to the San Juan Basin, along with extensive experience in environmental policy and organizational leadership. She spent more than two decades in the private sector as an environmental consultant, project development manager, entrepreneur, and policy specialist with a focus on water, energy, policy, and mitigation. Ryan also served for two years with the Peace Corps in Senegal, where she taught agroforestry.

As a long-time community member and current board member, Ryan is well positioned to lead the Alliance into its next chapter. She is eager to start her new role with the Alliance in June and meet more of our members and partners. Outside of work, you may find her outside - biking, running, backpacking, fishing, and generally soaking up the San Juans with her husband and friends.

The Board looks forward to working with Ryan to build on San Juan Citizens Alliance’s 40‑year legacy of community‑based conservation and advocacy.

Please welcome Ryan!
