Well, now that school is basically back in sesh…

it means Durango’s average age just dropped dramatically and City Market parking lot is about to become a full contact sport but our money is on the college students any day. 🤘🏼

Welcome back, Skyhawks. Our official advice compiled here…check it out. But also, go to class. Drink water. Buy snow tires. Call your mother. Do not trust “it’s an easy hike.” Never underestimate the altitude. And for the love of all things holy, do not base a romantic decision solely on someone’s Subaru, climbing ability, or Ikon Pass.

Most importantly: get involved in this weird little town while you’re here.

Volunteer. Show up. Meet people outside your bubble. Do something useful. Durango has a funny way of becoming home when you start taking care of it.

And if that accidentally lands you at a Rotary meeting with a bunch of people who know literally everyone in La Plata County?

Well.

You Should Be Here.

Somewhere else is still someone’s home. Devastating flash floods have hit Bhotekoshi, Nepal.

Families need food. Clean water. Shelter. Medical and hygiene supplies.

Rotary is already mobilizing on the ground. Now they need us.
If you’ve ever wondered what Service Above Self looks like from 7,500 miles away… it looks like showing up anyway. Link here to help support: https://relief.rotarydistrict3292.org.np/

Give what you can. Share if you can’t. Rotary shows up.

This is direct from and to District 3292 - we’re sending hope. 💛

This made our jaw drop:

One person can start something that reaches people they’ll never even meet. So since it’s Thursday and today at 12 we meet, we figure why not say “hey pull up a chair and join us” because…

Research on cooperation has found that one person’s actions can ripple through a social network up to three degrees of separation.

Kinda like our badge board. Names of people you know, who are here every Thursday. They show up…then another..

Then another.

Then another.

And suddenly those names are people sitting around the same tables - bringing different jobs, different connections, different ideas, different experiences, and one really important thing in common:

they showed up.

Today, our speaker is one of our own, Ryan Knorr, is talking Durango High School Athletics. We’re talking upcoming partnerships, future projects, and probably having at least one conversation that starts with, “Wait… what if we did this?”

That’s how so much of this begins.

One person has an idea.
Someone across the table knows who to call.
Someone else knows how to make it happen.
Another says, “I’m in.”

And suddenly one person’s idea isn’t one person’s idea anymore.

That’s the difference a room can make.

So if you’ve been wondering whether you could actually make a difference here, don’t overthink it.

Get your badge. Pull up a chair. Get in the room.

It’s Thursday. It’s High Noon.

You Should Be Here. 💙💛

A very warm welcome…home 💛 all the heartstrings for this one.

At 8:00 PM last night, a 17-year-old stepped off a plane carrying a suitcase, a thousand unknowns, and more courage than most of us will ever fully understand.

William left Denmark knowing the voices, streets, food, routines, and people that have always meant home. His parents watched him go with the kind of pride that sits right beside fear - the joy of knowing their son is brave enough to see the world, and the ache of sending him across it without them.

And waiting here was a whole village and family of people he has yet to know, and who also have some nerves but the good kind -

The kind where we’re so committed to making sure he has enough adventure, enough laughter, enough ordinary moments that one day become the stories he tells for the rest of his life.
That is the beautiful, terrifying thing about an exchange year: everyone involved takes a leap of faith.

A student trusts strangers to become family. Parents trust another home to love their child well. Host families open their doors knowing that, only for a little while, their lives will be forever changed and for the better.

Somewhere between the airport hug, the first ride through town, the unfamiliar bedroom prepared just for him, and the first nervous conversations, something begins to shift. To our newest Rotary exchange student, William: we hope this year stretches you, surprises you, and gives you more memories than your suitcase could ever carry back to Denmark. We hope you find friends who feel permanent, adventures that become family stories, and a community that shows you just how many places in this world can hold a piece of your heart.

You arrived last night and you are not simply visiting anymore. You are meant to be here. Welcome home.

This is Rotary Youth Exchange and you could do it too. Just ask us how to be involved. Go abroad, be a host family, volunteer to help. You should be here.
