Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is highly effective in protecting people from HIV. PrEP reduces the risk of getting HIV from s*x by up to 99% and from injection drug use by at least 74%. See the Figure below. PrEP is for people who don’t have HIV and are at risk of getting HIV from s*x or injection drug use. Truvada and Descovy are two oral PrEP medications. Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is for people who don’t have HIV and are at risk of getting HIV from s*x or injection drug use. Oral PrEP is up to 99% effective at preventing HIV acquisition from s*x and at least 74% effective at preventing HIV acquisition from injection drug use. See the Figure below. The two oral PrEP medications are Truvada and Descovy. Truvada is for all people at risk through s*x or injection drug use. Descovy is for people at risk through s*x or injection drug use, except for people assigned female at birth who could get HIV from vaginal s*x. PrEP is for adults and adolescents without HIV who may be exposed to HIV through s*x or injection drug use. Injectable PrEP with CAB is highly effective at protecting patients from HIV and is for adults and adolescents who weigh at least 35 kg (77 lb) and are at risk of getting HIV through s*x. HIV stigma is negative attitudes and beliefs about people with HIV. HIV discrimination is the behavior that results from those attitudes or beliefs. HIV discrimination is the act of treating people with HIV differently from those without HIV. See the Figure below. HIV stigma and discrimination can affect people’s health and wellbeing, and discourage people from engaging in HIV testing, prevention, and care. When we support people with HIV, we make it easier for them to lead healthy lives. Talking openly about HIV can help normalize the subject. PrEP is for people without HIV who may be exposed to HIV through s*x or injection drug use. PrEP reduces the risk of getting HIV from s*x by up to 99% and from injection drug use by at least 74%. See the Figure below. PrEP is for adults and adolescents who don’t have HIV, are at risk of getting HIV from s*x or injection drug use, and weigh at least 35 kg (77 lb). See the Figure below. Cabotegravir (CAB) 600 mg (brand name Apretude) is the only approved injectable PrEP. Truvada and Descovy are the two pills approved for use as PrEP. PrEP is highly effective in preventing HIV. Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a medicine that greatly reduces the chance of getting HIV from s*x or injection drug use. PrEP is for people without HIV who may be exposed to HIV through s*x or injection drug use. Truvada and Descovy are the two pills approved as oral PrEP medications. Apretude is cabotegravir (CAB) 600 mg injection. CAB is a single antiretroviral drug given as an intramuscular injection every 2 months to prevent HIV. Injectable PrEP with CAB is highly effective at protecting patients from HIV and is for adults and adolescents who weigh at least 35 kg (77 lb) and are at risk of getting HIV through s*x. See the Figure below. Apretude is a good option for people who have problems taking oral PrEP as prescribed, prefer getting a shot every 2 months instead of taking oral PrEP, and have serious kidney disease that prevents the use of oral PrEP medications.
