Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP)medication greatly reduces the chance of getting HIV from s*x or injection drug use. If you don’t have HIV but are at risk, PrEP can help you stay free from HIV. See the Figure below. PrEP can be pills or shots. PrEP medications include Truvada, Descovy, and Apretude. PrEP can stop HIV from spreading throughout your body. PrEP protects you against HIV. African Americans are one of the groups most affected by HIV. But there are more options than ever before to stay healthy. The first step is to know your HIV status by getting an HIV test. See the Figure below. CDC recommends that everyone 13-64 years old get tested for HIV at least once. People with certain risk factors should get tested more often. If your test result is negative, you can take actions like using PrEP, using condoms, and never sharing needles to prevent HIV. If your test result is positive, you can take medicine to treat HIV to help you live a long, healthy life and protect others. Knowing your HIV status puts you in charge of your health.
