Friends School in Detroit is a place where academic excellence and creative challenge are rooted in the Quaker tradition of cooperation and community spirit. Friends School is a nationally recognized independent school offering children from preschool (age 3) through eighth grade a caring community where each child can grow intellectually, socially and spiritually. This includes Sidwell Friends Sc
hool in Washington DC, a sister school to Friends School in Detroit, where Chelsea Clinton once attended and Barack Obama’s daughters currently attend. Located on 4.5 spacious acres, Friends School in Detroit is nestled within the Downtown Lafayette Park residential community along side the Dequindre Cut (revitalized physical activity pathway that extends from Eastern Market to the Detroit River), offering a dramatic view of the city skyline. Opened in 1965, as the first "intentionally integrated" school in Michigan and the only Quaker School in the state, Friends School has a student body that reflects the City’s cultural, religious, racial, and economic diversity. Our students come from all over the Detroit metropolitan area. All of our students, including our three and four year olds, enjoy the rich resources of our school including music, art and foreign language instruction. Friends School provides a well-rounded program where academic excellence, creative development, and community awareness are nurtured in a supportive, friendly environment. Our school is so unique and inclusive that our pre-K through 8th graders share the same building and often greet each other on a first name basis. Older siblings can encounter their younger siblings at various points throughout the school day. It's like one big family where the kids feel safe and never want to leave!
