We’re happy to welcome Alicia Nelson to Pope Francis Center as our new Jesuit Volunteer.

Originally from the Denver area, Alicia recently graduated from Santa Clara University, where she studied psychology with minors in environmental studies and anthropology. She joins PFC through the Jesuit Volunteer Corps and will spend the next year serving alongside our team while living in community with three fellow Jesuit Volunteers.

This is Alicia’s first time in Michigan, and she was especially drawn to the opportunity at Pope Francis Center because of the variety of the role and the chance to serve in a mission-driven environment rooted in Jesuit values. Throughout the year, Alicia will support a range of projects and initiatives across PFC while gaining hands-on experience in nonprofit work, community engagement, and volunteer coordination.

Looking ahead, Alicia is interested in building a career in the nonprofit sector, particularly in community organizing and volunteer engagement, and hopes to continue doing work that connects her professional interests with her Catholic faith and love for the Jesuit tradition.

Outside of work, Alicia enjoys exploring new places, reading, journaling, and finding time to relax. She’s already enjoying the variety of her work at PFC and is looking forward to everything this year will bring.

We’re grateful to have Alicia spending this year with our community and can’t wait to see the ways she’ll contribute, grow, and make an impact along the way. Welcome to PFC, Alicia! 💙

Today, we’re celebrating our happy place. 💚

Two years ago today, the first residents moved into the Pope Francis Center Bridge Housing Campus, marking the beginning of a new chapter in our work to help people move out of homelessness and toward long-term stability.

Since then, this campus has become a place of hope, community, support and new beginnings.

We’re incredibly grateful for every donor, volunteer, partner, staff member and friend who helped make this vision possible and continues to walk alongside our residents.

Happy Anniversary to our Bridge Housing Campus, and thank you for being part of the journey. 🎉 🏠

Care for our neighbors includes caring for the spaces that welcome them. 💙

Our friends from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan came over from across the parking lot for an after-hours deep clean of our Day Center. From the wood and marble to the glass, their hard work left the space shining and ready to welcome our guests.

“Our group was happy to clean and make the Pope Francis Center sparkle,” shared Greg Teklinski from BCBSM.

There’s still time to join us for Ignatian Spirituality & Yoga at the Pope Francis Center Bridge Housing Campus on Saturday, October 3 at 10:00 AM - 12:30 PM.

Come spend the morning with Fr. Bobby Karle, SJ, and Fr. Tim McCabe, SJ, for an opportunity to relax, restore, and reconnect through movement, prayer, reflection, and community.

The morning will include an all-levels yoga class, guided prayer, an introduction to Pope Francis Center and our mission, an optional campus tour, and Mass in the chapel. No yoga experience is necessary, and all are welcome!

We are incredibly grateful to Rising from the Ashes Revival for their generous support of Pope Francis Center.

Yesterday, we had the pleasure of welcoming Fr. Joe Mallia and Kelli Miller to our Bridge Housing Campus for a tour and the presentation of a gift made possible through proceeds from the Rising from the Ashes Revival.

The revival brought Catholics from across the Archdiocese of Detroit together for a day centered on faith, hope, renewal, and service. Proceeds from the event benefited Pope Francis Center and several other local organizations serving our community.

We are deeply thankful to everyone involved with Rising from the Ashes Revival for choosing to support our mission and the people we serve each day.

Thank you for believing in this work and for helping us continue to feed, serve, and empower our neighbors experiencing homelessness. We are blessed by your partnership and grateful for your prayers and support.

We are excited to welcome Betsy Beerer to Pope Francis Center as our new Manager of Individual Philanthropy!

A lifelong resident of Royal Oak, Betsy has a long-standing passion for service, volunteerism, and building strong communities. She earned her degree from Oakland University and brings experience in relationship-building, philanthropy, and community engagement to her role at PFC.

Betsy first connected with Pope Francis Center in 2023 through her work with Vella Group, when she had the opportunity to support PFC’s mission. That experience left a lasting impression and ultimately led her back to PFC, where she felt called to bring her passion and experience to the work of ending homelessness with compassion and dignity.

Outside of work, Betsy loves crafting and even started a craft club last year! She also enjoys traveling, discovering great food, and spending time with friends and family.

Betsy lives by the motto, “It’s all about community,” and is excited to build relationships with PFC supporters and be part of the community working toward a future where everyone has a place to call home. 💚
