We never wanted to write this post. Effective immediately, Bull Terrier Rescue Mission is closing intake.
As of yesterday, we had 92 dogs in our program:
34 in foster care.
43 in foster-to-adopt homes.
15 in hospice care.
92 dogs who have already been promised that we will be there for them.
Right now, our bank account is empty. Our credit is maxed. Veterinary bills are waiting to be paid, and our average veterinary expenses are approximately $25,000 every month just to care for the dogs already in our program.
And lately, the medical cases have been relentless.
We have had multiple obstruction surgeries and other major medical cases. This weekend alone, we took in 6 new dogs. We have another 11 dogs we have already promised to help and are working to bring into the Mission.
And the requests don't stop.
At the rate they are coming in, we fully expect another 5 surrender requests this week alone. Every day brings another email, another message, another shelter deadline and another dog whose family has nowhere else to turn.
We cannot stem the tide anymore.
BTRM is completely foster based and operates across approximately 30 states. When foster homes aren't available and a dog is facing euthanasia, sometimes boarding is the only thing standing between that dog and death. That costs money too.
We ask for donations. We hold raffles. We fundraise constantly. Our volunteers give an unbelievable amount of their time and themselves to keep this Mission going.
But it simply isn't enough anymore.
There are very few grant opportunities available to a rescue like ours. We don't have a major corporate sponsor. We don't have big donors quietly covering our bills behind the scenes.
We have you. Our village.
And that village has helped us perform miracles again and again.
But right now, we have reached the point where saying yes to another dog could mean jeopardizing our ability to care for the 92 who are already counting on us.
We cannot do that. So, with incredibly heavy hearts, we are closing intake.
This hurts. We are exhausted, and knowing that there will be dogs we cannot help is devastating. There will be messages we read knowing we don't have a place to put the dog or the money to provide the care they need.
But rescue also means keeping the promises you have already made.
We made 92 of them.
They need food, preventatives, boarding, training, surgeries, medications, veterinary care and, for our hospice dogs, the comfort and dignity they deserve for however much time they have left.
We have to protect them first.
If our financial situation improves and we can responsibly reopen intake, we will. Nothing would make us happier.
Until then, we need our village more than ever.
If you can donate, please help us rebuild enough of a financial cushion to care for these dogs and eventually open our doors again. If you cannot donate, sharing our posts, participating in our raffles, fostering, fundraising or simply helping our dogs be seen matters tremendously.
We don't want to stop saying yes.
But right now, saying no is the only way we can keep the promises we've already made.
