That monarch stopping in your yard this September may be doing a lot more than looking for a snack.

Michigan’s fall monarchs are part of a special “super generation” built to survive the roughly 2,000-mile migration to central Mexico. Along the way, they depend on late-blooming flowers for the nectar that fuels their journey.

And somehow, despite never having made the trip before, they find their way to the same mountain forests where millions of monarchs spend the winter.

So if you see one passing through Metro Detroit this fall, give it a little extra appreciation. You may be catching the very beginning of an incredible journey.
