Books in their hands. Pride in their eyes. Possibility everywhere.

Throughout National Reading Month (March), the Detroit Alumnae and Delta Psi chapters of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated collected 100+ Black children's books. We encouraged donors to purchase books by Black authors from Black-owned bookstores, with Amazon as an additional option for those who wanted to ship books directly to us. In April, we presented the entire collection to the library at Coleman A. Young Elementary School in Detroit — where students welcomed, guided, and showed us exactly who we're doing this for.

DAC President Jenice Mitchell Ford said, "Representation matters. When you read about yourself in books, it helps you to have bigger dreams, to see yourself doing something different than what you are. Reading helps you escape to other places and gives you a bigger worldview."

Delta Psi President Arielle Phillips added: "Books ignite imagination, so when you have these books that show Black characters as ballerinas, as doctors, as lawyers, that is important for our young people to be able to see that this is a possibility for them — because it is."

To Principal Melissa Scott, the students, teachers, administrators, and staff of Coleman A. Young Elementary School — thank you.

Together, we're building a love of literacy and a legacy of possibility — one book at a time.
