Abayomi CDC Families for the future. For over 10 years, Abayomi has provided services to over 8,000 youth and families in the metropolitan Detroit area.

Our goals are to establish an awareness of the value of family, improve socioeconomic conditions and increase the level of dignity and personal achievement within the Detroit community. Our mission is to strengthen and secure families and the local community through comprehensive community building. Together, the Board of Directors and staff of the Abayomi Community Development Corporation value FAMILIES: Fairness, Assistance, Morality, Improvement, Love, Involvement, Enrichment, and Security. The Abayomi Community Development Corporation provides housing and economic development, counseling and education, and sports and physical fitness programs and resources to youth and families in the metropolitan Detroit area. From the artwork to the interviews, the conversations at our design panel, the stories shared through ‘Detroit 48202’, the families photographed on Family Portrait Day, and the celebration of closing night—Where We Belong gave us so many ways to connect with the amazing people who call this place home.

We’re ready for Week Two of Where We Belong: The Architecture of Home.

The first week brought so many of you into the space to experience the work, share your stories and think with us about what it means to belong in a changing Detroit. This week, we’re continuing that conversation through film, family, memory and collective investment in what home can become.

Thursday, September 18 | Educators Night + Film Screening
Join us for Detroit 48202: Conversations Along a Postal Route, a documentary exploring community, memory and change through the relationships formed along one Detroit mail carrier’s route. Educators are especially encouraged to attend.
Doors at 6:30 PM · Film at 7 PM • Limited seats left!

Saturday, September 20 | Family Portrait Day
Step into our living-room portrait setting and preserve a piece of your family’s story with portraits by Rowan Minor. Come with family in whatever form it takes.
1–5 PM · Free · RSVP required

Saturday, September 20 | Closing Salon + Exhibit Auction
We’ll close the exhibition with dinner, sounds by DJ Al Ester and an opportunity to take home work from the show. Auction proceeds will benefit Abayomi’s Community Homeownership Fund—moving the conversation about home toward tangible pathways to ownership, stability and legacy.
7–10 PM

The exhibition remains open through September 20. If you haven’t experienced it yet, this is your week. If you’ve already visited, come back and spend a little more time with us.

Detroit, we’re almost here.

Where We Belong: The Architecture of Home opens this week — bringing together art, design, storytelling, and community around one question:

Who gets to call Detroit home?

We begin Thursday, September 10, with our Opening Reception — an evening of art, music, food, and conversation at The Boulevard.

On Saturday, September 12, Orlando Bailey of Outlier Media joins us for a day of special interviews exploring Detroit, home, neighborhood, memory, and what it means to belong.

Then Sunday, September 13, we gather for Building Belonging, a design conversation with three Detroit voices working at the intersection of place, people, and the built environment:

Bucky Willis — architectural designer, educator, and owner of Crane + Boom, whose practice centers community, social impact, and human-centered design.

Angela Carlberg — Senior Director of Community Development Ecosystem Building at Community Development Advocates of Detroit, working across the people and organizations shaping Detroit neighborhoods.

Milah Renee Wallace — interdisciplinary artist, designer, and founder of JAH-D Spaces, whose work moves across architecture, photography, film, and community-based practice.

Moderated by our President & CEO, Hannah Morris, the conversation asks what it actually means to design for belonging — not simply what we build, but who it serves, who shapes it, and who gets to remain.

And this is only the beginning.

Home is never just a house.

It is memory. Ownership. Inheritance. Safety. Identity. The people who came before us—and the possibility of what we leave behind.

This September, as part of Detroit Month of Design 2026, Where We Belong: The Architecture of Home invites Detroiters into an open studio installation exploring what it means to belong, who gets the opportunity to own, and how we imagine a more rooted future for our communities.

Through artwork, history, storytelling, and community design, we’re asking people not only to experience the show, but to add their own voice to it.

And this work goes beyond the gallery. Where We Belong supports Abayomi’s effort to build a Community Homeownership Fund, creating more pathways for Detroiters to own, stay, and build legacy.
