A little riding, a little luck, and a whole lot of fun at the Rampart Range Fall Poker Run!

Stay The Trail joined the Rampart Range Motorcycle Management Committee riderampartrange for their fall Poker Run, a noncompetitive event that gives riders of all ages and abilities a chance to get out and enjoy the trails. Riders chose between short and long courses, collecting cards along the way and hoping for a winning poker hand at the finish.

STT was there providing the PA system to help RRMMC volunteers cover event rules, course information, trail etiquette, area history, and responsible riding before everyone headed out. We also had area and statewide maps and resources available throughout the event.

But the Poker Run is only part of what RRMMC does. In addition to hosting two of these events each year, their volunteers put in the work during as many as seven scheduled work parties, riding motos into project sites to complete critical trail maintenance throughout Rampart Range.

Fun events and stewardship go hand in hand. Thanks to the RRMMC volunteers for everything they do on and off the bike.

The off road community is about more than the trails we travel together.

This weekend, Stay The Trail joined colorado4x4girls for their 10th Annual Be Heard! Off Road Show at 4wpdenver in Denver, an event dedicated to raising awareness, breaking the stigma around mental health, and supporting su***de prevention.

For 10 years, Be Heard! has created a place for people to connect, find support, and remind each other that no one has to navigate the difficult parts of life alone.

Proceeds from this year’s event benefit resilience1220, a local organization providing free counseling and emotional support to youth ages 12 to 20.

We’re proud to be part of an off road community that can come together around an important cause and use its reach to make a difference beyond the trail.

Thank you to Colorado 4x4 Girls, everyone who helped make the event happen, and everyone who came out to support the cause.

🌲 Northern Colorado Trail Update
We’re happy to report that trail conditions are looking good, and the landscape continues to recover from the Cameron Peak Fire. The OHV crew has been hard at work repairing and reopening routes, and on Friday they were using heavy equipment to tackle some much-needed route work on lower Killpecker.
While we were out, we had some great conversations about responsible riding, fire prevention, and how we can all do our part to help keep trails open.
It was also great to see the area getting plenty of use—from large family groups riding a mix of machines to some e-motos out on the trails. The fire tower was open for tours, too!

🏔️ Red Cone & Webster Pass Sign Project Complete!
Great news from Red Cone and Webster Pass! This past month, Mile Hi Jeep Club officially wrapped up the signage project that began in late June.
Club members installed the second trail map panel on the existing kiosk at the Red Cone cutoff. With updated maps now available at both the staging area and this important trail decision point, visitors will have better information to help navigate the area and stay on the correct routes.
After completing the installation, club members continued over Webster Pass to Montezuma to inspect protective fencing the club installed several years ago. We're happy to report that the fencing remains in good condition and continues to help protect the surrounding resources.
👏 A big thank you to Mile Hi Jeep Club and everyone involved in putting stewardship into action and helping take care of these popular trails!

🏔️ Taylor Park Update
We spent some time in Taylor Park partnering with the U.S. Forest Service on outreach and talking with folks out enjoying the trails. We saw a mix of motorcycles, ATVs, and side-by-sides throughout the area.
🐄 Heads up if you're headed to Taylor Park: The cattle are out and grazing, so keep an eye out for cows—and cowboys! Cattle are sometimes moved ahead of busy holiday weekends, but it sounds like they'll be staying in the area past Labor Day weekend. Slow down when you encounter livestock, give them plenty of room, and be respectful of the ranchers working in the area.

Stay The Trail had a busy weekend at Overland Expo Mountain West!

Throughout the weekend, we connected with truck campers, overlanders, 4x4 owners, families, and other outdoor enthusiasts about responsible motorized recreation and protecting access to Colorado’s public lands.

Colorado 4x4 Rescue and Recovery and the U.S. Forest Service Clear Creek Ranger District joined us in the booth, giving attendees an opportunity to ask questions, pick up resources, learn more about trail etiquette, and better understand where and how different vehicles can legally recreate.

For the younger crowd, our RC course stayed busy with kids learning to navigate the trail while getting an early introduction to one of our most important lessons: Stay The Trail.

Events like Overland Expo also give us an opportunity to reach people who may not necessarily think of themselves as traditional OHV users. If your 4x4 or truck camper takes you onto Colorado’s motorized trails, knowing the regulations, understanding where you can legally travel, and practicing responsible recreation are just as important.

Thank you to Colorado 4x4 Rescue and Recovery, the Clear Creek Ranger District, and everyone who stopped by our booth throughout the weekend.

We had a blast at Touch A Truck in Woodland Park on August 12!

Stay The Trail brought out the big orange Jeep and a booth full of goodies for kids and families, including our youth activity books featuring ROHVER, decals, educational handouts, rubber ducks, and resources for learning more about responsible recreation.

There was plenty to see throughout the event. Kids had the chance to get up close with fire engines, helicopters, snow plows, tractors, ambulances, massive military JLTVs, and all kinds of other equipment.

For us, events like Touch A Truck are also a great opportunity to introduce responsible recreation to the next generation. Teaching kids about respecting trails, taking care of public lands, and making good decisions outside can start well before they are old enough to drive or ride themselves.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by the Stay The Trail booth, checked out the Jeep, grabbed some goodies, and spent a little time learning with us. We hope to see some of these future trail users out there for years to come!

On August 12, Stay The Trail partnered with the U.S. Forest Service Gunnison OHV crew for a day of outreach focused on educating both Colorado residents and out of state visitors about responsible recreation in Taylor Park.

Some of the most important reminders are also some of the simplest. Use hand signals to tell oncoming riders how many vehicles are following you. Manage your speed around dusty blind corners where visibility can disappear quickly. Slow down when traveling through mountain communities and around campsites where other visitors may be walking, riding, or enjoying their time outside.

With an area as popular as Taylor Park, education on the trail is only part of the solution.

Stay The Trail is currently developing a new official Taylor Park OHV and 4x4 trail map that will eventually be featured on kiosks throughout the area. We are also installing two new kiosks, including one at Mirror Lake, and deploying two mobile educational billboards to put responsible recreation information directly in front of trail users.

Together, these projects give visitors better information before and during their ride while reinforcing the habits that help keep Taylor Park safe, enjoyable, and sustainable.

Enjoy the hundreds of miles Taylor Park has to offer, and help us take care of them while you’re there.

220 feet of new fencing installed at Billmoore Lake in just an hour and a half!

On August 15, Stay The Trail met up with Mile Hi Jeep Club volunteers at the U.S. Forest Service Clear Creek Ranger District work center for a major trail maintenance project. After loading the buck and rail materials into JC British’s 6x6, the crew grabbed hardhats, gloves, and tools and headed up the Billmoore Lake trail.

The objective was to better define the road perimeter near the tree line and protect the fragile alpine tundra surrounding it. One of the recurring problems in this area happens when spring and early summer snowdrifts block the route and users attempt to drive around them.

Alpine tundra is particularly vulnerable to vehicle damage and can take years to recover. If you encounter a snowdrift that you cannot safely travel through, please do not create a bypass around it. Turn around or get the shovels out.

JC British’s 6x6 was the MVP of the project, hauling more than 200 feet of heavy fencing materials up the challenging route and directly to the work site. Once everything was staged, the Mile Hi Jeep Club crew quickly found their rhythm assembling the bucks, drilling, and securing the rails.

The result: all 220 feet of fencing installed in about 90 minutes, with the crew wrapping up just as a thunderstorm started moving in.

Thank you to the Mile Hi Jeep Club trail adoptees who came out, worked hard, and helped protect this sensitive area. Projects like this are a great example of how trail adoptees, volunteers, land managers, and organizations like Stay The Trail can work together to protect resources while maintaining motorized access.

Not a bad way to spend your 82nd birthday!

Smokey Bear celebrated his actual birthday with us on Sunday at the Columbine Parking Area, joining the Clear Creek Ranger District and Colorado 4x4 Rescue and Recovery for a busy day of education and outreach.

And Smokey put in some work.

Together, we checked OHV registrations, handed out MVUM maps and Forest Service resources, helped visitors learn about the COTREX app, cleaned up the parking area, serviced trash cans funded by OHV registrations, and helped manage parking as people arrived to recreate.

By the end of the day, we had made more than 125 contacts with visitors. Smokey even took some time away from the parking lot to visit campers at Columbine Campground.

Happy 82nd birthday, Smokey, and thanks for spending it helping us take care of Colorado’s public lands!
