Colorado’s college athletes generate massive profit for the NCAA, conferences, their schools, and our communities, and they deserve fair pay and a real say in the conditions they work under.

We are deeply disappointed that the Senate, including our own Senators Hickenlooper and Bennet, passed legislation that puts more power into the hands of anti-union special interests that profit from athletes’ labor while making it harder for athletes to organize and collectively bargain.

Workers know that real progress comes when we have the power to shape our own futures, whether our work is on a construction site, in a hospital, or on a college field or court.

On tonight’s Labor Exchange we talk local labor history and the Lafayette History Museum with Leigh Campbell-Hale, author and retired educator. We talk about a new exhibit at the Lafayette History Museum for its 50th anniversary. Campbell-Hale’s book “Remembering Ludlow but forgetting the Columbine The 1927 - 1928 Colorado Coal Strike.” covers the I.W.W. led strike in Serene, Colorado outside of Erie.

Five women linked together with a metal chain and standing in front of a chain link fence as part of the female-led strike in Brighton, Colorado against Kitayama floral plant. Guadalupe Briseño organized her fellow workers at the plant to protest against unfair working conditions, which cost her her job. Their 221-day strike began on July 1, 1968. Strikers endured financial strain and embittered struggle, and although they weren’t granted a union, conditions at the plant improved, and the strike was inspirational to many across the Chicano Movement.
