The Summer Youth Garden Competition officially begins today at Weaver Creek Park, but it is still not too late to sign up!

Today is the first day participants ages 13–18 will begin tracking their volunteer hours as they spend the summer learning how food is grown, developing practical gardening skills, and contributing to a community-centered space.

Throughout the program, youth will gain hands-on experience in the garden while building confidence, connection, and a deeper understanding of environmental stewardship. At the end of the summer, prizes will be awarded to the top three contributors based on volunteer hours.

We’re excited to welcome participants into the garden and look forward to seeing the growth, learning, and community that will take shape throughout the season.

Summer is almost here.

Our Youth Garden Competition begins June 2nd at Weaver Creek Park, and there’s still time to get involved.

This is a chance for ages 13–18 to spend the summer outdoors, learning how food is grown, building practical skills, and contributing to a space that supports both people and the environment.

Participants track their volunteer hours throughout the summer, with prizes for the top three contributors.

No cost to participate — just time, curiosity, and a willingness to be part of something.

One simple way to support your local ecosystem this season.

Incorporating native plants into your garden helps create a more resilient and balanced environment. Because these plants are adapted to local conditions, they typically require less water, fewer inputs, and provide important habitat for pollinators and wildlife.

Native plants also play a role in improving soil health and supporting long-term sustainability in your garden space.

Small choices like this can have a lasting impact on the health of our shared environment.

Save this for later and share it with someone planning their garden. Follow us to learn more.

Last week’s pre-Mother’s Day gathering reminded us how meaningful it can be to slow down, create together, and spend time in community.

On May 9th, families, friends, volunteers, and community members joined us in the garden for a morning centered around growth, creativity, and connection. Throughout the event, participants engaged in hands-on activities that fostered both learning and shared experiences in nature.

From garden planning and planting to creating Living Lockets with botanical materials, each activity offered space for creativity and reflection. Community members also helped plant the Medicinal Labyrinth garden, while others took home flower bulbs to continue growing beyond the event.

What made the day especially memorable was not just the activities but the conversations, collaboration, and sense of togetherness that filled the space throughout the morning.

Events like these continue to reflect what matters most, cultivating vibrant, healthy communities through gardening, education, and shared experiences in nature.

Thank you to everyone who spent part of their morning with us and helped make the event so meaningful.

Which activity would you most want to see at a future community event?

Touch grass. Learn something real. Win prizes.

This summer, Jovial Concepts is hosting a Youth Garden Competition focused on hands-on learning, community connection, and time spent outdoors.

From June 2nd through August 2nd at Weaver Creek Park, participants will gain practical life skills, learn how food grows from seed to plate, explore pollinators, and build real experience in the garden.

Participants ages 13–18 can join at no cost. Throughout the summer, volunteers will log their hours, and the three participants with the highest involvement will receive prizes.

This is an opportunity to spend the summer building something meaningful while learning skills that last.

There’s a quiet kind of transformation that happens in the garden.

It happens when someone discovers they can grow their own food. When a participant takes responsibility for watering a garden bed. When fresh herbs are harvested for a shared culinary activity. When a morning in nature becomes a place of confidence, calm, connection, and purpose.

Our GardenAbility Program creates adaptive and accessible gardening experiences for individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities. Across nine acres of open space, participants explore vegetable gardens, sensory spaces, walking paths, the orchard, and the labyrinth while engaging in gardening, art, and culinary activities designed to support mental, physical, and emotional wellness.

But what makes this program truly meaningful is the sense of ownership participants build together.

Each participant helps care for the GardenAbility beds by taking on leadership roles like watering, composting, or tool care. Together, they nurture produce from seed to harvest — food that is later donated to local food banks and shared with the broader community.

The photos in this post are from the very first week of the GardenAbility season here at the park, and already we’ve seen moments of joy, curiosity, teamwork, and growth.

We’re currently looking for volunteers to support the program during GardenAbility days from approximately 9:30 AM–12:30 PM. It’s one of the most rewarding ways to spend a morning — working alongside participants, supporting meaningful experiences, and helping cultivate a more connected community.

If you’ve volunteered with GardenAbility before, what has stayed with you most about the experience?

Healthy gardens start with healthy soil.

In Colorado, our soil tends to be heavy in clay, which can make it difficult for many vegetables to thrive. One of the most effective ways to improve soil structure is by adding organic matter like compost, with a general goal of reaching 3–6% organic matter in vegetable gardens.

Fertilizers can support plant growth, but they need to be used thoughtfully. The three numbers on most fertilizer packages represent Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potassium — the primary nutrients plants rely on. While these are essential, too much can disrupt plant health rather than support it.

This is why soil testing is an important step before adding amendments. Understanding what is already present in your soil helps prevent over-application and supports long-term soil health.

We’ve seen firsthand how excess nutrients, especially from repeated applications over time, can lead to imbalances that limit plant growth.

Building healthy soil is a long-term investment that supports stronger plants and more resilient gardens.

Meet one of the people helping this community grow.

Volunteers are at the heart of everything we do at Jovial Concepts. From preparing garden beds to supporting programs like GardenAbility, their time and care help create spaces where connection and growth can happen.

Each person brings something different, but the shared purpose is the same — to cultivate a space that welcomes, teaches, and brings people together.

We’re grateful for the individuals who continue to show up and invest in this work.
