COSTA would like to congratulate Master Bill Albrecht for completing the WT International Referee Seminars in Albania! Let's wish good luck to Colorado athletes - and COSTA Board members - Master Sean Jung and Master Joe Coughlin as they compete in the 2026 World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships! This year, the championships return to Korea 20 years after the first poomsae worlds in Seoul. This 5-day tournament has the largest numbers of athletes participating, and Team USA is stacked with a number of previous national team members and world medalists!

You can cheer on Master Sean and Master Coughlin - and all of Team USA - on World Taekwondo's YouTube livestream. Remember that Korea is 15 hours ahead of Colorado, so be sure to tune in starting on September 15. Fighting!!!

The COSTA board was pleased to present Colorado athletes, David Kim and Alexa Darlin, with embroidered national team belts. David and Alexa represented the US at the 2026 Pan American Taekwondo Championship in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil this past May - with Alexa bringing home a gold in the O17 pairs freestyle division. Congratulations to these two hard working athletes!

The DEADLINE is rapidly approaching - AUGUST 1 - to request stipends to help offset the cost of registration for the 2026 USAT nationals. To be eligible for a stipend, athletes and coaches must belong to a school/dojang that is a COSTA member.

Alternatively, athletes and coaches may join COSTA as an individual. 📧 Email [email protected] for the membership application. (Memberships run from January to December).

To request a stipend, email your full name (or parent’s full name for athletes younger than 15), your mailing address, school/dojang affiliation, and proof of paid USAT nationals registration (for coaches and athletes) or paid USAT nationals seminar registration (for referees) to [email protected] by August 1, 2026.

Individuals who fall into multiple categories (athlete and coach or athlete and referee) may request only one stipend.

Funding is limited and will be processed on a first come-first served basis. These stipends are for Colorado athletes, coaches, and referees only.

Leadership in action!
Last week during the USAT National Championships, Master Joseph Coughlin learned that an athlete from Virginia waiting to compete was without a coach. This was the athlete's first nationals, and his parents were not sure how to help their young son navigate such a big tournament. Master Coughlin graciously agreed to coach this Tiger poomsae athlete - staying with him and his parents from holding all the way to the podium!

Not long after, Master Coughlin learned that another young athlete was without a coach, and he bowed in this Tiger black belt as well!

Master Coughlin demonstrated the best aspects of taekwondo - putting athletes first and helping them achieve their goals!

We are thrilled to share that the Colorado State Taekwondo Association (COSTA) has earned a State Association of the Year Award from USA Taekwondo! It is such an honor to represent the athletes, coaches, and referees from the great Centennial State!
