Mission of Sight was created to assist the temporary physical needs and address the eternal Spiritual condition of those we serve.

Mission of Sight was formed in September 2004 as a compassionate ministry with the mission to share the Gospel through the gift of sight. This came to be through the lifetime work of Dr. Paul Gamertsfelder, the father of Work and Witness in the Church of the Nazarene. Dr. Paul, a retired optometrist, for many years traveled to the Caribbean regions to conduct eye clinics. Using his resources and God’s strength, Dr. Paul distributed thousands of pairs of glasses over the years, and through the help of volunteer Eye Care teams, restored sight to countless individuals. Because of the great need for health care in the Caribbean, a vision was cast for a multipurpose health clinic that would provide medical treatment, education, and training and would meet the needs of the whole person, body, mind, soul, and spirit. In March 2008, ground was broken for the Gamertsfelder Mission Centre in Frome, Jamaica. The building was constructed over a period of two years with the help of many Work and Witness teams and contractors. The first eye exam was conducted in the new GMC in November 2009, and the actual ribbon-cutting ceremony for the primary care wing was held on May 1, 2011.

At Mission of Sight, our commitment to children’s eye health goes beyond simply checking whether a child can see the letters on a chart.

A vision screening can identify a potential concern, but a comprehensive eye exam helps us understand the health of the eyes, identify vision problems, and detect conditions that may otherwise go unnoticed.

Every child deserves the opportunity to see clearly, learn confidently, and reach their full potential. That’s why we’re committed to providing thorough, comprehensive eye care.

Sight changes everything! And sometimes, all it takes is a pathway to care.

This World Sight Day, Mission of Sight is celebrating every person whose journey to better vision begins with a pathway to care. From a child receiving a comprehensive eye exam to an adult finally receiving the cataract surgery they have been waiting for.

We believe no one should lose their sight simply because they cannot access the care they need. But creating these pathways takes partnership.

Our 2026/27 Surgery Season Begins!

We’re thrilled to welcome our first surgical team of the 2026/27 season to Jamaica!

Joining us is Dr. Howard Amiel of Insight Vision Group, Colorado, alongside our honorary Jamaicans: Ophthalmologist Dr. Brian Stahl, returning for his 32nd trip to Jamaica, and Optometrist Dr. Ty Clase, both MOS Board Members. Rounding out the team are Leo Amiel, serving alongside his dad, and our very own Tamika, our Spiritual Care Volunteer.

Partnering with God to “remove the scales”, physically and spiritually, is a humbling privilege. We’re grateful to continue recovering sight, restoring independence, and transforming lives.

We see some pretty serious cataracts on a day to day basis. These are all cases where the patients were completely blind. Luckily, we are blessed with the best doctors including Dr. Khanna who is now a part of our national team, allowing us to continue our work even between visits from our teams in the States.

"Once Was Blind but Now I Can See"

Getting your sight back looks different for everybody, but when we ask our patients what they are looking forward to most with their restored sight, we often get the same answer: they can see their family again.

Their children, grandchildren, siblings or parents.

Some go years without seeing their family, or have grandchildren they've never seen.
