Mission of Sight

Mission of Sight Mission of Sight was created to assist the temporary physical needs and address the eternal Spiritual condition of those we serve.

Mission of Sight was formed in September 2004 as a compassionate ministry with the mission to share the Gospel through the gift of sight. This came to be through the lifetime work of Dr. Paul Gamertsfelder, the father of Work and Witness in the Church of the Nazarene. Dr. Paul, a retired optometrist, for many years traveled to the Caribbean regions to conduct eye clinics. Using his resources and G

od’s strength, Dr. Paul distributed thousands of pairs of glasses over the years, and through the help of volunteer Eye Care teams, restored sight to countless individuals. Because of the great need for health care in the Caribbean, a vision was cast for a multipurpose health clinic that would provide medical treatment, education, and training and would meet the needs of the whole person, body, mind, soul, and spirit. In March 2008, ground was broken for the Gamertsfelder Mission Centre in Frome, Jamaica. The building was constructed over a period of two years with the help of many Work and Witness teams and contractors. The first eye exam was conducted in the new GMC in November 2009, and the actual ribbon-cutting ceremony for the primary care wing was held on May 1, 2011.

"When I woke up in the morning, I look thru the window I can't see nothing but fog"

This is a story we hear often, but it never changes how wonderful it is to hear the words that follow: "but now I can see!"

A cataract surgery can restore more than sight. It restores independence, dignity, and livelihoods.
This Cataract Awareness Month, join Mission of Sight in the recovery of sight. Together, we can help more individuals, families, and communities.

Throwing it back to one of our favorite moments 💙

Kathleen was blinded by cataracts for years before she found us. When the patch came off, she could see again and was clearly full of joy! Moments like these are why we love what we do.

This young lady spent over a decade in the dark, so when the patch came off and she could see out of that eye again she was overcome with emotion.

What a collectively big heart this team has! Led by the incredible Dr. Steven Suh and Dr. Charles Cohn, they brought with them a spirit of joy, compassion, and the kind of care that restores more than sight, it restores dignity and hope. In just 4 days, 53 blind eyes now see!

From Ohio and Texas to Jamaica, this is what love in action looks like: lives transformed by vision restored.

Special shout out to Dr. Suh for the new MOS song that captures the heart of our work at MOS.

Sight restored. Lives transformed.

Our Q1 recap is more than numbers. It’s people seeing clearly again, families renewed, and hope restored. We witnessed lives change in ways that go far beyond vision, because what starts with restored sight often becomes a deeper transformation in spirit, opportunity, and possibility.

Thank you for being part of this life transforming work. Every contribution, whether financial, relational, or through advocacy, helps us reach more people who are waiting for the gift of sight.

Seven days. One mission. Lives changed forever!

We had the privilege of hosting the Fellowship of Christian Optometrists from The Ohio State University College of Optometry for an unforgettable week of service.
Six student doctors and one optometrist, fully immersed in medical missions at its best.
From surgical post-ops to SLT, to general clinical care to witnessing the life-changing impact of cataract surgery. This team experienced the full journey of sight restoration .

Together, we joined in the work of restoring sight, to the glory of God. This enduring partnership with the FCO @ The Ohio State continues to be one of our most treasured.

Thank you for your faithfulness, your compassion, and your willingness to go where you are needed most.
