From a small garage to a growing cooperative rooted in Dayton. 🍄💚

In 2018, Guided by Mushrooms started with a simple idea that grew into something much bigger.

Today, they’re doing more than growing mushrooms. They’re building a worker-owned business that creates jobs, shares knowledge, and keeps food and resources circulating throughout our community.

From supplying local restaurants and markets to supporting community education and creating new opportunities with local schools, their story shows what happens when we pool our skills, resources, and relationships to build something that benefits more than just one business.

Headed to the Stoddard Avenue Pumpkin Glow on October 27? Pre-game with us!

Our board of directors will have snacks, drinks, and a chance to talk about something that matters: how do we keep our neighborhood grocery store open and serving the people of Dayton?

Before Gem City Market opened, there wasn’t a grocery store in this area. Today, neighbors have a place nearby to grab a gallon of milk, fresh food, and everyday essentials.

We want to keep it that way, and we want to hear from you. What would make the market more useful to you and your family? What could we do better?

We’re a community-owned store, and that means our community needs to be part of the conversation. Stop by, grab a snack, and tell us what you think. We’d love to see you!

Building a co-op isn’t always a straight line. Sometimes the challenge becomes the lesson—and the lesson becomes the path forward. 🌱

Behind every cooperative are people figuring out how to share ownership, make decisions together, navigate setbacks, and keep building when things don’t go according to plan.

In our next conversation, worker-owners will share what it has actually taken to build their co-ops: the wins, the challenges, the things they’ve had to learn along the way, and why choosing collective ownership mattered in the first place.

Because building together isn’t about getting everything right. It’s about asking what our experiences can teach us—and what becomes possible when that knowledge, power, and ownership are shared.

Sometimes cooperation starts with one need. And then, as people begin building together, that one solution can grow into something much bigger. 🌱

In our conversation with Dr. Jessica Gordon Nembhard, we explored how cooperatives can evolve from meeting an immediate need into networks of shared knowledge, ownership, resources, and support—what begins to look like a cooperative ecosystem.

But ecosystems don’t grow in a vacuum. The ability for cooperatives to start, survive, and expand is also shaped by the conditions around them: access to land and capital, pathways to ownership, community infrastructure—and policy.

So the question becomes: What happens when our policies make cooperative ownership easier to build? And what happens when they don’t?

We’re continuing that conversation on October 14 with our Co-op Policy Lunch & Learn: Reimagining Policies, exploring how policy can help create the conditions for stronger, more accessible, community-owned solutions.

Ten years ago, this started with people coming together around an idea. Look at what we’ve built since. 🧡

From organizing around Gem City Market to supporting new cooperatives, shared spaces, worker-owned businesses, jobs, and access to capital—each chapter has shown us what’s possible when people bring their skills, resources, relationships, and belief in something bigger to the table.

No one person built this. We built it together.

And 10 years later, we’re not just looking back at what we’ve accomplished. We’re asking what the next decade could hold, and what we can build when we continue to invest in one another.
