September is Hunger Action Month—a time to raise awareness, take action and deepen our understanding of food insecurity in our community. 🧡
In Montgomery County, 1 in 6 individuals and 1 in 4 children face food insecurity. Behind these numbers are our neighbors, friends, coworkers and classmates- people who may not always have reliable access to the food they need to thrive.
Throughout the month, we invite you to learn more about hunger, share available resources and discover ways you can be part of the solution.
Montgomery County (Montgomery County, Ohio ), the Montgomery County Food Equity Coalition, and Waste-Free Dayton are committed to going beyond awareness. Together, we are working to address the barriers and conditions that contribute to hunger and build a stronger, more equitable food system where everyone has access to nutritious food.

Welcome to Sustainable September! This is our fourth year for this campaign, our month long focus on different topics related to sustainability. Later this week we will take a look at all of the R’s of Sustainability.

It was a beautiful morning for a litter cleanup! We had a large group of volunteers, consisting of employees from Kettering Health and Neaton, neighborhood residents, and first time as well as long time WFD volunteers. Also a cute little cat that literally followed us around the whole neighborhood. 😻🐈

This was WFD’s 9th litter cleanup of 2026, and 76th overall. Looking ahead, we’re planning a couple of different events in September, and Make a Difference Day cleanups in October.

Three years of monthly coffee chats and counting! Great group and great discussion today about native plants. Thank you Brooke from Meadowsweet Ecological Landscapes for being our special guest and sharing your knowledge about native plants and trees. And Partial to Pie Bakery is always one of our favorite places to go, thank you for accommodating our large group!

Year 3 of “going low” (waste) at the Oakwood Ice Cream with Green Oakwood. This past Sunday we were able to divert over 100 pounds of recycling and organic material from the landfill, with most of it being composted. Thanks to Green Oakwood for the set up of the waste station and overall coordination, and thanks for the continuing support to make this a low waste event.

It was a great day to learn about and celebrate our local food system! 🌽 Thanks Five Rivers MetroParks / 2nd Street Market for hosting again this year, and thanks to Montgomery County, Ohio Food Equity Coalition for putting on the event. Today was the last day of National Farmers Market Week, so it was the perfect way to end the week!

Join us for the 3rd Annual Nourishing Montgomery County on Saturday, August 8th at 2nd Street Market from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. This free family event is a fun way to connect with agencies and businesses that are working to make our local food system more equitable and sustainable! Join us for games, giveaways, live music, demonstrations and so much more!
